    Base coat....

Hope Im not tempting fate, but I have put the base coat on the front/rear bumpers and it looks sweet.

I am getting far better at painting now, I am getting a lovely thick wet coat with no runs at all.

There are a few tiny reactions in places that will never been seen, so fook them, and about 1 or 2 tiny specks where dust has landed.

But all in all, thrilled. I have put a dust coat on, then two really thick coats on as I dont wonna run out of paint, but the paint is a deep metalic colour and it appears fine, instructions say only two needed anyway.

So just the laquer and it should all be done, I will get some pics up when I can.

Sounds like you're doing well! Glad to hear it. Nothing beats seeing freshly painted parts looking mint. Especially when you did it yourself.

I'm still prepping mine (should have the prep finished tonight, then start priming).

    Re: Base coat....

Had a tiny bit of dust come down when spraying laquer , can I sand 1K laquer to get it out the re-apply in that area?

    Wet or dry?

    Re: Base coat....

You have 2 options - if there is enough paint on there you can rub it down (I would use P2000 - wet) and then just polish it (compound first then finishing polish).

Or you could do what you say and rub it down and then re-laquer, but to be honest, unless it is very bad you shouldn't need to do that.

Just be very careful not to rub through to the basecoat.

    Re: Base coat....

I'm painting an ancient Vauxhall Victor. It needs a full respray. Lots of prep.

What Mike said - remember if the dust is on the surface its usually slightly proud of the lacquer which means when you pass over it (gently!) it hooks out of the lacquer rather than needing to be cut right back to the layer below the dust.

Always work WET on lacquer with just about enough pressure to hold the block against the panel. Don't press on or you'll scratch it or rub through. Also "feel" for any sensation of roughness like a dust or clog in the paper to avoid pulling scratches across your shiny new finish. Even though its dry its still not cured to its full durability yet so its still easy to damage.

    Re: Base coat....

Well I sorted the dust by wet 1200 then laquerd the whole panel again.

Anyway the front bumper is on, dont worry Im not driving yet, and the colour is perfect and the shine is dam good, only thing I would say is real close up you can tell the diffreance in the finish on the original paint, it has a deeper shine and more smooth.

But I am very happy with my first painting job, I just hope its durable!

Hoping to get the rest of the kit on tomorrow, cant believe how long this takes!

Is there a cutting compound that will smooth it a little and bring a deeper shine, 1K laquer was used?

I take it this is with a proper air compressor and spray gun, i wanna paint my bumpers but i will be using cans.
Is the shine acheieved by a thick coat of paint but without runs.

Erm, Im no expert, but no, shine is not achieved by what you mention.

I have no experience of using cans but its all about preperation and the correct use of materials/layers of paint/technique, thats what gets results.

    Thats what you said^^^
It seems stuff i actually try doing good come out crap, like i sprayed an arch and that came out different shade of colour and very dry. I did proper sanding, 3 coats of primer, 3 of colour, and 2 of laquer, and it was ****e.
Yet i sprayed a spare grill, just practicing like, didn't even sand it down, no primer or anything, i coat of gloss white spray and that came out as shiny as my car, whats that all about lmao
The paint even stuck and dryed proper.

LOl no idea, but what I mentioned, was like I said...............I have no experience of using cans but its all about preperation and the correct use of materials/layers of paint/technique, thats what gets results................I only put two full wet coats on mine, you will need more as your colour is high opaque, I think, lol.

One thing to remember is that you will get much less paint out of an aerosol than a gun. Therefore to stop it being dry you need to either to more passes or move the can slower - you should be able to see as it goes on whether it is dry or not.
