I've just finished a 4 year multi skilled apprenticeship with British Sugar. I did a very similar thing to philip by doing a onc, hnc, hnd, nvq2, 3 etc etc. I also started when i was 16. We have women apprentices at other sites so i doubt its because your a woman. Any companies which would be offering apprenticeships would now have there people as they usually take them on before september ready for the new school year
Turbo Power is here!!!! And my god i LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

true about the girl thing, even though im still trying to blag them to get a tidy girl apprentice b4 i get too oldlmao

i had done the onc, first year full time in college, 2nd year day release, then hnc 2 years of day release, whilst working. i also had to do key skills level 3, nvq level 3(log book work) and couple of other things.

motor trade tbh isnt worth all the time, unless you go with a big company, i know a few lad who started in 'ok' garages and ended up getting laid off, and not being able to finish the college course.

i rebuilt engines for myself, mates, kit cars etc, and help mates with their car problems, but i could never be a full time mechanic or anything, too much hassle with poeple as it is

without being big headed or boasting or anything.

1st year i was on £600 take home in college full time
    2nd year £750 take home
    3rd year £1095 take home
    4th year £1198take home

now ive served my time im on £41k a year shifts
    days are on £34k

you tel me where a mechanic is anywhere near that?, i like mucking about with cars, have done since 12, but i took the chance of doing engineering, not mechanics

Well said, if you like mechanical stuff, just do engineering, opens up a whole world of opportunity, do cars in your own time for fun!

awww well i might just give up now and tie myself to the kitchen sink!!! and im not bothered about how much money i make coz now im working at a cinema where i just about get minimum wage! And me hubby earns more in a month than i do in 6 months. i called that silly learn direct to see what they could advise about going into the trade and they was useless because they said there was no use going to college or any courses as i have no qualifications at all! I missed the apprenticeship's at vauxhall by like two days but because of the hassle we had with our Astra they have offered me the next apprenticeship that comes up as like a sorry, ill wait and see not too hopeful like. Anyway were moving up north at some point in the next year so may hold out till after the move and then try and take it further up there when i know exactly what kind of job would specifically suit me. Anyway off to clean out me throttle body (thanks to Total Vauxhall's mag) and plod on making popcorn!
cheers for the advice guys ! even if some of you are sooo sexist!!! lmao

Just the way the world works, unfortunately.

At least no-one's bull****ting you and telling you you'll find it as easy to get a job as a spanner monkey as a bloke.

Have you thought about specialising in one particular area? For example, windscreen fitting? You become competant quite quickly, learn from a pro, and in a few years of doing it you'll be a local hero, and you can do foreigners at weekends.
Teeth? LUXURY! When I was a child we ate by putting rocks in our mouth and jumping up and down.

Most apprenticeships normally start in september to tie in with the academic year. This means that you normally need to apply in march time when they start advertising for apprentices. I've just started my final year of my apprenticeship, but at my place they do adult apprenticeships, however they're normally for labourers/semi skilled people who've been there for a while. It may be worth finding out about adult apprenticeships. Try large engineering companies to get technical experience.

You can't get thicker than a Kwik-fit fitter.

Sounds like you need some help with the approach to job hunting, if someone says yeah we will give you a job, and doesnt ring back, why the Fook did you not ring them and say "Oi, wheres that job you said i could have" Noone will just hand you a pucker job, you have to go and get it!

BIGGEST MISTAKE...............Phoning people doesnt work, they put the phone down and forget who you are and what you said... go and see them in person, walk into autoglass or similar and say "id really like to train to be a screen fitter can you help please!" take a card with all your details on it and hand it to him, get his/her name and number and tell them "I look forward to hearing from you" and ring him every 2 weeks to get an update... show them your keen cos if you are, any business would be daft to ignore you.

in a morning you could drive around too every single garage, screen fitters body specialist etc etc in your area, dont speak to counter boy, or secratary... ask for the boss...

Qualifications dont mean everthing, experience means allot, you will have to start at the bottom, but persevereing and reminding people where you want to end up from day one will make you look keen, and thats all that matters.

Always do or say something that will make them remember your name, because otherwise your just like everyone else asking for a job.

very well pointed out there might do that Monday don the "interview suit" and go for a toddle round a few places that i would be interested in working at. Also applied to Arriva today as a trainee bus tec person, so will see as they said my name has been put forward and will know shortly. Best start browsing through local websites and see what places offer what services and see what jumps out and says " I can do that".
Well thanks again, you guys rock im off to print some contact cards

even if you have to write a cv out, may not be the best, but tbh with all the laws n that now, if they have a position going, they must/should give everyone equal opportunities for applying, even if yours doesnt look impressive(might do i dont know) but your attitude plays a big part too, if your dressed smart, polite and seem enthusiastic then your giving right signals to a potential employer.

when i applied for apprenticeships, i had rebuilt a old vw beetle from top to bottom, i did a prot folio of the build, and out of 900 or so people who aplied to kelloggs for mech apprenticeship, i was the only person who had something to show i was capable hands on. same with castle cement, scania etc.

you should really have a CV and explain that you mess about with cars in your spare time, that proves you enjoy working with them, and dont just need any ole job

Well I can't put with my son laying around all day, so I've just paid £150 for a Calibra 4x4 16v
and he now has to rebuild it. The cambelt snapped so the first thing is to rebuild the engine and then see what happens.

    way to learn.

i bought a vw bug of one of my dads mates when i was 15 i think, rebuilt the whole lot, engine, box, all bodywork, paint everything, and i was only person who had something to show i was hands on.

best way to help get a job is too show that your capable/hands on, and you have more chance.

mark - just make sure you help ya lad if he asks, im 20 now, but tbh except for my dad wanting to have a go painting metal flake, i did most of the work myself. get him manuals, etc, let him get as far as he can until he asks, then help then let him crack on til ask again, etc or if he gets stuck, and its simple(as in you can see the problem but he cant), just tel him to have a think, and watch him, just so he can learn himself.

That's just what I've been doing, as I think it's the best way.
