    HQ Performance: Rolling Road Results

    Afternoon gents...

Now safely back in Bath having racked up 1,675 miles in the last week and amazingly, not engine management lights in sight. Would just like to say thanks to all of you who made the effort and attended the event, appreciate alot of 'us' Scots have to drive hundreds of miles to attend such meets so that makes it even more special. Great turn out of cars, and as usual a good mix and some surprises on the day!

The icing on the cake was the wee run we had into the wilds, I was pleasantly surprised that so many of you got involved and although there are probably still a few lost souls driving around Kenmore, desperately trying to find the M74 or McDonalds in Perth, the day was a success I reckon. Plus, always good to see cars used... forget this arrive, polish, power run, polish, piss off crap!

Regarding the results, these are the runners and riders and the respective power figures but bearing in mind these are wheel figures as currently HQ haven't managed to convert them back into flywheel/pubtalk figures but have assured me they will ahead of the event going into the magazine.

So, from the top... and apologies for not adding user names, I have nae idea!

    208.9bhp and 265lbft

    6. Andy Gorski - Tigra

    202.4bhp and 212lbft

Re: HQ Performance: Rolling Road Results

For me, one of the most interesting points noted on the day was this...

    2. Margaret Graham - Astra VXR Nurburgring
    Standard (!)
    226.0bhp and 233lbft

    5. John Sumner - Astra VXR
EDS IPF mapped, Forge intercooler, Remus exhaust
    208.9bhp and 265lbft

Quite interesting the difference in the figures, ie the 'standard' Nurburging pulled quite matched power and torque figures, whereas Coo's were really quite diverse.

Granted the Nurburgring had the higher bhp, but on the road the VXR would tear it from arsehole to earhole thanks to a better torque figure.

Just interesting how the two cars, at different levels of tune resulted in such diverse figures.

    P.S... nice clour coded graph!

Marc's car recorded the lowest on the day, but it was also bang on manufacturers figures... not bad considering it's 15 years old and total original, even down to the exhaust system and intake assembly. That all said and done, we were all having a serious issues keeping up / loosing him over 150 miles of wet, Scottish roads.

Just goes to show, absolute power corrupts, absolutely.

    Coo...

I know I've said it before but I can't help but feel a custom map would be the next step for your car. Your AFR graph is like the Scottish Highlands, in fact much like mine when I had a generic phase 1 map (ie, a pish one!). I still maintain a generic flash map / IPF map will never get the best results as they are designed to be a little safe, plus are written to suit a majority of cars, not a specific one. Bit like buying a suit from George, or having one tailored. yes, they both do the job but one will be a better fit.

Comparing your graphs to the Nurburgring, your AFR is all over the place whilst it's is a perfect curve but teh boost pressure is the opposite. It's is very spikey and peaks around 1.1bar then drops, picks up and drops (actuator, BCS or maybe has a cheeky wee generic map in there?) whilst yours is very smooth and hold boost much much better. One thing though, it only peaked at 1.1bar, your's is nearer 1.75bar yet your power figures were low. Then again, as your's hits 1.75bar around 3000rpm, teh fuelling gets a bit erratic. Similary, it gets very lean towards the top end.

By no means am I having a pop, just don't feel the generic IPF map is doing you any favours and I'm not signing the praises of any specific mapper but bear in mind, mine is running 270bhp at a maximum of 1bar, yours is doing similar figures at almost 0.75bar more. Not only are you not getting the power figures, but the turbo will be running at the top end of it's abilities and thus putting it under undue stress.

Custom remap, you know it makes sense!

'Burg was bought as a standard car. Guy didn't mention any tuning at all it doesn't have a filter or even a dv. Boy who owns it is a Honda man he just finished building a K20 Civic so didn't know it pulls better than a standard 'Burg. When will this be in TV? And also a did a hear someone mention the VXR8 isn't being featured? And ps a thought someone would have brought my cleaning stuff i won from TV but never recieved

The Nurburging may well be bought as standard, but it pulled some pretty impressive figures none the less. As said, the boost graph is a bit roller coaster but fuelling seemed spot on and it peaked around 14/15PSi... maybe somebody has wound the actuator up a couple of threads on a standard map, which would explain why it's boosting slightly higher than standard plus is very erratic as the standard ECU map would be trying to pull it back down a bit. This however, is purely speculation!

As for the VXR8, yes it's going in as Stevie was amngst the 12 who stepped forward on the thread and also turned up on the day. Thems the rules.

As for your cleaning stuff, that 'someone' would be me... but given I know nothing about it, I would suggest you pop an e.mail to the office with your name and address. Unfortunately, my talents stop short of mind reading!

    Cheers

Don't really understand the attitude. Russ thought it was maybe stage one map maybe just an Eds Ipf generic map though. Not that quick on the road as you mentioned though as its not got that much torque. Aye a thought he should be in the mag as its an impressive car but a heard someone mention in the crowd that they didn't think he wanted featured thats why am asking. Will email the office cheers. What issue is it going to be in so a know to make sure a get a copy

Cheers for the translation of the graph Dave...you know I'm more about the driving...

I'm nearly at the end of my tuning limit as regards to fitting parts, and have had the benefit from the IPF along the way.
For no drama, easy upgrade mapping it's a no brainer, fantastic piece of kit. Especially with the amount of maps available:

I hear what you're saying about a tailored map... and you have some good and valid points.
There may be an IPF unit and map for sale soon !

Jamie, I dont think Daves giving attitude to the burg owner...just offering explanations...

Noticed Mr Supercharged VXR8 in Practical Performance Car this month, he did an event at edinburgh airport - top speed challenge, unfortunately had clutch problems.....looks like they never blanked his plate out

Will be watching the progress of the Saabastras !
