87' Carlton - Add V8 and US cop car styling

Hey guys, I thought I had put up some work I have been doing on a 1994 Carlton saloon, I picked her up for 150 off an old lady. The fuel tank had rotten out and the lady got a nasty shock when it covered her feet in petrol, as you can imagine the garage quote she got to replace it was so bad she sold it to me.

    Its very slow, a 2.0 8v (115bhp) auto gearbox!

This is the first picture I took, i'd already lowered the rear here:

The rear is factory dampeners and Astra mk3 estate springs, the poundage remains the same as factory so its comfy but decked!

The front is one of my old coilover conversions:

This is how it looked when I took it to Trax on our stand, surprisingly receiving a lot of attention!

The plan for this car is to use it in a road rally next year, making it look like a US style "black and white" cop car. Something like this:

Although the first job was really to sort out the fuel tank I had to find a replacement, new bare tanks were 150 so I sourced a second hand one for a tenner! Thinking ahead I knew I wanted to fit round style rear arches but welding near the fuel tank/filler on the O/S meant the tank needed to come off anyway - so this all happened in one go:

    Original arch:

First job the old knackered tank comes off, without even touching it a massive hole shows itself underneath the breathers:

The round arches are spare front arches cut out, traced onto the original 1/4 panel, cut it out. Then slit the inner arches so they can be flared out:

If these where senator rounded arches I wouldn't need to do this as senator arches are inline with the body, whereas these are heavily flared in a similar fashion to a BMW M3 arch Vs BMW 3-series arch.

    New arch welded in:

    Zinc primed:

    Wheel test, will it fit?

    These are 10j x 18" Azev A's

With the original wheel back on you can see the new line:

I do have a pet hate for how weak most alloy wheels are, so I opted for this car to have steel wheels. I wanted the same ones I had originally on the Carlton estate:

On the estate the wider rears were actually no wider than the front as they were simply reversed and re-welded. This time I wanted big ass wide rear wheels and no gay stretched tyres. So once the arches were done I could do some measurements and then pay Banded Wheels Essex a visit, they added a 2.5" band to the rears to make them 9j:

    Nice squared rubber, 245/45r16:

    Plans:
I have already fitted the front end of a senator as I prefer them and the rounded design is more in tune with a crown victoria cop car shape (pics to follow).

The wheels are going to be media blasted and painted in diamond black

GSi 24v rear beam/diff/suspension assembly will be fitted with camber reset to 1 degree negative

To buy and install a 1UZFE (Toyota/Lexus 4.0 V8) on a manual gearbox (probably a ZF BMW gearbox)

Paint front and rear in diamond black and middle in white

Get stickers made up, at the moment I have a choice of: Pursuit, Interceptor, Highway Patrol, State patrol, LAPD or NYPD (even though the NYPD never used the black and white style paint job).

    Roof light bar: Legal issues
Having read several legal regulations regarding light bars, colours and 'impersonating a police officer' I have decided on this design:

    Reason being:
    It looks epic
These single lamp x7 V-style was never used in the UK
No blue lights - blue light (emitted or just lens colour) is a big no no

Also in the event a police officer pulls me over I have to show that the lights cannot be activated, so I plan to run a plug and loom I can attach for the shows only.

Loving the arch work. It will look awesome in the cop car look above.

Banded steels have given me a semi.

I dare any of you to tell me you wouldn't let this upstanding young citizen slob on your knob like corn on the cob.

Thought about wide steels, painted black - but a design that takes the small, pie dish chrome hub caps?

Where did you (or are you) getting the lights from?
Could you not get a couple blue lenses for them and then just run covers when it's on public roads?
The 7 light arrays are used on some ambulances over here so blue lens replacements should be available

Federal Signal Vector light bar ordered!! It will take a few weeks to arrive as they are the manufacturer and need to build it before shipping.

Not exactly a cheap bit of hardware but it will set off the car a treat

Re: 94' Carlton into US style cop car

    Very small update:

My siren arrived!! Its only a cheapy from china, here is a video of it in action:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STs2rg4uLF0

Although there are much better ones out there I don't actually want the siren noises (I think they are lame on this model anyway), all I want is the bull horn (1st left button on the control unit) and maybe the PA system too. I have tested the unit, its stupidly loud! I plan to take apart the control unit and wire up button 1 to a remote button on the dash, then hide the unit somewhere.

The horn speaker itself is huge and very heavy, but I think I can squeeze it behind the grille!!

I haven't really done any work on the carlton at the moment, I have been concentrating on the Nova but keep an eye out as I will be updating once the light bar arrives.

Nope, even full screen it's short of 'awesome' - then again, in a previous job one of my duties was fitting lights, radios, etc, to newly commisioned Police cars, so may be over it
