    mk3 c20let rebuild

well ive always liked the look of mk3s and i know they aint the best handling car in the world so when i moved into my place with a garage about 3 years ago i replaced the bike with the mk3 for a project and had a 150bhp cdti diesel mk5 astra hack (terrible cars) i traded it in for my s3 and the mk3 didnt get touched for a while but then i wanted spare room back lol

thought id post a project thread here and say thanks to cemex and cavalier_c20let on here as without them id not have found the bits oh and dazzi for breaking the gsi finding parts has been the biggest pain in the ass i bought a turbo off here which came with a cracked wastgate and wrecked turbo shaft (mashed impeller) so its been frustrating

the car needed a bit of welding so i stripped it all down and put back in some fresh metal - die grinding the floor was not much fun! rear arches are original but i patched up metal work...sills are mint so cant be oririginal crossmembers been replaced

ive not painted with 2 pac or welded before so i took my time and when putting it back togethor everything leaked and all wires needed soldered up. did paint the back arches 3 times! but space was a nightmare

all i have to do now he says....icv loom and run a wire to fuel pump then tidy dash wiring before refurbing wheels fixing door locks and getting mot

    day 1

hole even bigger under arch where a big wheel rubbed and wore it away

toook buff to engine bay so painted it all up

    oooh no rust

for some reason the first lacquer job didnt "go off" was all rough and dull and would buff

garage with heater and home made bathroom vents worked a treat

    better paint this time!

home made engine hoist worked a treat

    put back togethor again

underneath and arches all ground and undersealed engine back tidied up drivers side completely painted and offside rear arch done - paints not perfect you can see imperfections at blending but im happy at how smooth and shiney it looks in person colour match looks fine too in person

    just these to refurb now!

spec is as standard as i wanted it to be - by that i mean body kit and gm parts always wanted c20let so its standard engine with ph1 ecu early coscast head refurbed cometic gasket and f20 box + fmic. nice new ina lifters + timing kit all new mounts and tigersealed up refurbed subrame new bushes/arms 288mm 4 stud brakes new brakes rear all new brake lines (they leaked a lot) be happy with about 230 bhp in this

mint gsi interior no rust on tailgate or bonnet and the washer jets appear to work

just plan to potter about with it dont want big power or anything just an old car i like the look off with a decent bit of power

everything that could leak did so if the botton end knocks and the turbo smokes im going to cry everything turns over fine by hand (phew)

I've still got loads of photos of it Dave if you need any!

Standard power is sensible choice as even with the LSD my current one goes nowhere lol

    Re: mk3 c20let rebuild

its not really - theres load of imperfections in person ill be repainting it this winter i think but its nice and flat i hate textured paint. my s3 is terrible for it.

near side passenger arch was too sheltered and got a bit damp but good learning curve. thankfully the cars had a few paint jobs as 81l on near 20 year old car would be a nightmare to blend in!

not sure about pvs. put some fuel in it last night tidied up some wiring so just waiting on a new longer earth lead and fingers crossed it fires up and nothing leaks again then i might just try and brave driving it lol

    Re: mk3 c20let rebuild

well its been bugging me cause of the electrical gremlins but the only 2 things not working now are rad and fog lights

really happy to just drive it 10 yards and wash it after 2 years and i forgot what my garage looked like.

seemed to idle a little bit better after i put it in gears and moved back and forward a bit........

really does need a proper paint job to blend in the work i did but im pretty damn happy today

    Re: mk3 c20let rebuild

well after a load of messing around its finally ready for MOT / get some miles to see if anythings broken

brakes are a bit spongy so will have a look at them this week but i took the brakes off to fit spigot rings so that explains that. i repainted the drivers side as i wasnt happy with the finish

i honestly thought id never get this far but gotta keep going and trying again! its no show winner but feels quite good doing all the work yourself in limited space

looking very good dave and liking the s3 also. makes me sick thinking about mine but hopefully the DTM will will be finished to a degree. isnt the middle bit of the splitter further forward than it should be?

will be good to see it on the road and no doubt you will enjoy it more than the s3 lol
