Planes, trains and a Vectra GSi estate...

Since May last year, the daily driver fleet has consisted of the Volvo estate and the Audi A4. The latter of which racked up a mere 4,000 miles since it's MoT last February and also needed a fair amount spending to get it through it next one... tyres, front discs and pads, cambelt kit, heater repaired and so on. It wasn't worth doing plus we didn't really need two cars sat on the drive. I stuck it up for sale, made a bit more than initially hoped and that was that. Job done.

The issue was, for the past few weeks/months I've been looking at Volvo V70R estates (again!) and had earmarked two. A silver one and a gold one. The sensible head kicked in and they were deemed too dear, too expensive to run and also too far away plus the good lady about flipped out at the thought of two elderly Volvo estate on the drive. So, I gave up on that idea... for now. At that point, I was offered a Vectra GSi estate for a decent price and having had a wee think, it pretty much ticked alot of boxes and having spoken to the owner, it seemed like it's had money spent where it matters but an illness meant he could no longer drive it.

So, cue a 3am start on Saturday morning and an early morning run to Edinburgh airport. First flight of the day down to Gatwick followed by a short train journey into Croydon then a taxi to the chaps house. Quick look round, drove it round the block and decided it'd do so handed over some cash, went and taxed it then hit the M25 followed by the M40 and A5 bound for Stella's pub for an overnight stop and about 300 gallons of beer. Sunday morning, left and headed to Irvine and via Benny's thne back over to Edinburgh to collect the Volvo and 2 days and about 1,200 miles after setting off, got home late last night with this...

On the whole, pretty chuffed with it so far. It's a 2000 GSi with the 2.5 V6 which was the ideal combination as I prefer the phase 2 styling and didn't want the 2.6 either. Cosmetically it's standard but mechanically it's had a Courtenay lightened flywheel and an uprated clutch fitted (which is a bit of a git!) along with 308mm brakes, drilled and grooved discs and Redstuff pads all round and uprated suspension. It's also recently been serviced, had the belt kit replaced, the oil cooler, coil pack and leads renewed and had the wheels refurbished and a set of Eagle F1's fitted. All good in that department.

On the downside, there are a few wee niggles to address but nothing life threatening or too difficult to sort...

    1. Refit the front bumper as it's got a gap on the passengers side
    2. Remove the flying chips badges and the Ring sticker
    3. Sort the play in the steering column universal joint
    4. Replace the carbon fibre esque door piller stickers
    5. Give it a damn good clean inside and replace the boot carpets
    6. Sort the drivers door regulator and replace the speaker as it's rattling
    7. Try and get another tailgate as there's a rust bubble under the wiper arm
    8. Strip, clean and paint the brakes along with the struts
    9. Replace all the fluids, filters and the thermostat as the gauge is a bit erratic.

A side for that, it's all good so far. It chewed up the 620 mile drive home without any issues and returned about 33/34mpg in the process. It'll probably do more after a bit TLC, bearing in mind it's been sat for the past year and only moved to be MoT'd in October so it was a bit ropey to start with but perked up after a few miles on the motorway.

She's happy too... so that's all that matters!

    Cheers

Sounds like you have a cracking load lugger there Dave although I suspect the lolvo would be used for tip runs, engine transport etc.

Re: Planes, trains and a Vectra GSi estate...

Aye, well the initial theory was to bin off the Audi as it was a disastor waiting to happen then run the Volvo on it's own for a while then sell it and buy a kinda ticky boxy and much newer estate car that does everything - maybe an Astra Mk5 SRi Turbo estate or similar. I hadn't actually planned on buying this but it was cheap enough so hence, it's now outside. The Volvo, it's just too cheap and too handy to get rid of plus if our situation changes, we may need two cars and I could end up regretting selling it if that's the case. So for now, whilst it's not costing me anything to own (aside for fuel) it's staying and will probably be used most the time as it doesn't matter if it gets dented, scratched or the young team clamber all over it!

    Cheers

Lovely motor that Dave, loved my old CDX V6 estate. Bet it picks up well with the lightened flywheel.

Love it mate, iv just got rid of mine, i did nottingham -ayreshire to fetch mine lol was great but it seemed to have a flat spot which i didnt like but can be semi fixed by changing the for to a 3.8bar off the 2.6 apparently. Also town driving i was getting about 22mpg lol well worth it though hope you enjoy, getting pretty rare nowadays!

Cheers chap. As for the flywheel, aye it does feel a bit livlier through the gears however it's a bit stuttery at lower revs... I can't quite decide if that's the lack of flywheel mass or if it's because the car's been sat unused for a good long while and needs a bit TLC. Definately a bit unrefined at lower speeds but fine once it gets over the 1500rpm mark.

Very likely chap as I really can't see the Cavalier being finished for summer at this rate / lack of spare cash plus we're headed down for the full week so that's me, her, the young team and enough crap to give the British Army a headache so can't see a Cavalier Turbo coping too well, hence this was another reason for buying another estate.

And aye, joining is on my to do list. Has been for several months but hey!

Nothing wrong with taking a while to finish a car project.

Mine used to have a stutter issue, found blasting the crap out of the intake pipework and tb with carb cleaner did wonders.

Lovely looking car. As soon as i saw the pic i thought "loose the chips and stickers" so obviously not on my own there.

i always go miles for cars, and say if it makes it home thats good enough.

I know what you mean about estates, i went thorugh a phase of subaru legacy's. but likewise T5r's and even VR4's still appeal to me.

Badges and stickers all now off and in the bin.

Quick estates are the future. Just waaaay too handy... never realised how handy until she arrived with her A4 saloon complete with non folding rear seats. Anything more than a weeks shopping from Tesco and it just gave up. Big estates... you can fit Tesco itself in the back.

    Sorted!

Nah, the flying chips were immediately deemed to make it a ST200 wannabe by Mr Bennymac so they had to go. Plus I don't do stickers. FTW.

Wagons are indeed the future, if there was a very fast diesel estate that I could afford then I'd have one!

Ahhh see, I already have Helga and she's the fastest estate on the planet.

As for the 3.0... nah, but I reckon there's enough bits under the bed to knock up a spare C20LET.

See, the only problem with cars like that is when they go wrong. E60s scare me with their fancy pants technology, almost bought an E39 last year but didn't because it was too complicated .

I reckon that the 3.0 suits a Vectra better , a supercharged one more so but it'd be wrong wheel drive .

These used to be my weapon of choice... Had a good few of them and truely brilliant cars. Especially the shock factor when an impreza tries to burn you off.
