so does it still leak all its water into the oil? how did you clean the head face and bore? did you remove the pistons? tbh even in the photos the head face looks like it needs a skim and you mention a 8mm recess in the head?

It's a different head now mate, a spare 1 that I know was good. The first head is in my ally pile waiting for scrap! I've not filled the water up yet in case it all needs to come off again. I want it to run for 10 seconds before I fill the coolant up.
Cheers

They are lengthed and numbered mate so it's basically impossible to get them wrong. Thanks for the help thoughSomeone mentioned the crank could be 180 out so ill set the engine to time and take number 1 plug out and have a look to see where the piston is.

erm, the crank cannot be 180 out on a double overhead cam, is the marks are right the timing should be correct, and lengthed and numbered they maybe but it’s still possible for them to be on the wrong post on the coil pack as they are very close together

Just checked the ht leads on the coil pack and they are correct. Completely lost now so any more ideas will be really appreciated!

looking again, are you expecting it to idle/run with no inlet etc attached? as it will be getting lots of unmetered air at present

Not to run mate, it should fire up and want to rev up to the limit. As soon as it fired I'd kill it. Just got the inlet off to see what's happening. Which isn't really helping! I'll get it all back together and try it but to be honest it will only backfire thru the inlet even when it's back together.
