Did a bit more welding on the cage tonite. Some of the welds are not great, but not easy in some areas. also added plates to the front of the cage.

    Cheers for looking

Couple of small things done. Cut the windscreen out of the car so could see what i can do to the cage at the A piller, stiffening wise. The windscreen smashed so will need anew one. Also trying to find the middle of the car, so can put the cage down to the floor. And finally got some tube cut so can turret the rear suspension, not sure if its wide enough, will need to look at it.

    Re: Project 4x4 astra

Well got a couple of hours on the car to nite. started turreting the rear suspension to make room for the coilover and give it a bit of strength and pick the cage of it. Wasnt sure on the best size of tube to use, so went with wot i could get my hands onto. bit thicker than i would of liked but should do the job.

Bit more work on this side be great.

Was out in the garage today and nite, I had started doin the o/s/r turret but didnt finish it, so started with that today. Then moved into the n/s pretty much the same idea, cut a big hole and replace it with my half circle tube. Then moved onto making the cross brace from the top of the suspension.

Got out in the garage for couple of hours, so cut and made the rear stays for the cage. went to beside were the cross brace is think this will give the turrets max strength, due to cutting out so much. Now i cant decide if i put a cross in or just 1 bar corner to corner, wot ppl think. Wot ever i do will be using 38.1mm tube instead of 45mm which the cage is made of.

Not been out in the garage for a week or so, been busy with other things. Small update tonite. went and picked my 1 1/2 inch tubing on tuesday nite, 3 lengths of it for the rear cross, door bars and wot ever else i decide to pick up. So started on the cross, pretty happy how it looks.

Alrite, got a bit more done on my cage last nite, Wanted to pick up the rear turrets to the main hoop basically the usual triangle strenghtening. But when i was doin it, the inner arch was getting in the way, so knocked that out the way to make room for the tube to pass, then knocked it back into shape again, but will be running a weld over the top to give it a bit more strength. Its coming on nicely, pretty happy with the cage. Just using a grinder, marker pen and measuring tape to get the angles rite.

    Re: Project 4x4 astra

Got few hours on the astra tonite, got the drivers seat mounted, cheated and bought the weld in brackets, was goin to make my own , but for the price and quailty cant go wrong and i didnt lol. the tube u get is to long so had to cut a couple of inches off, no point having loads in the sill or tunnel for no reason. Also tonite weld the front cage to the bulkhead, nothing to big there.

    Re: Project 4x4 astra

Bit more done on the car tonite, not as much as wanted but mounting seat is a pain in the 4rse. Anyway same as last nite, but on the passengers side, bit more tricky as there is the big hump for the exhaust underneath. But wanted the seat in the same area at each side, so had to do some work, but the end result is minted, small problem with the bolt hole on the pass seat, but hopefully a thread cleaner will fix that. Some more welding either tomorro nite or sat will have the rails finished and some plate work.

    Re: Project 4x4 astra

Bit more work on the car today, removed the seats to keep them clean. Started on the bracing from hoop to tunnel. Once again nothing fancy, just straight pipe, ano most are made with a straight bit of pipe bent to shape, but not got that kind of stuff or pipe bender so done it my way. Not sure if im 100% happy with it yet, still bit of work to do then will c. Its taken shape.

    Re: Project 4x4 astra

Got a good bit done on the astra tonite. Borrowed a pipe bender to bend a pipe for across the bulkhead. Just tacked in in place the now to c how it looks. Looks ok lol. Then moved onto make the passengers door bar. now couldnt decide if wanted a cross or 3/4 of a cross, its to do with the height getting in and out. So made the long piece first, then one short piece, tacked them in place. then made the other short piece, not 100% happy with how they line up, dont think they are totally equal so goin to play bout with them bit longer. So that was it for tonite.

Well guys got out in the garage yesterday and today, which im pretty happy with. Wot i was doin was fitting the corsa c epas column. I seen on mig web someone fitted it to a mk2 (i think) which i copy a bit but he was using a adjustable column were mine is solid. Think goin to need to add stablizer on it to stop the movement. Wot u think? Some pics.

Alrite. Not started on the vectra, bits are here tomorro. So did a bit to the astra. Wanted to make the tube for the front turrets. Been thinkin of ways to do it and came up with wot ive done, bit more work to be done but pretty much the way i wanted it, tho not 100% happy with the drivers side, didnt seam to bend the same way as passengers. But dont have any of the tube to try again coz was old cage. Also started on the harness bar only done one so far. Wot u think?

Alrite. More progress on the 4x4 Finished off the front turret supports, pretty happy with how they look. Did the passenger side harness bar, looks good to. then made gusset plates, think thats wot there called for the passenger door cross, I know u can buy them but thot would try make my own, looks great to me, not 100% happy with the welds. Also welded the rear arches to the cage.

    Re: Project 4x4 astra

Well got out in the garage for few hours tonite, decided to build a roll over jig, couple of reasons, 1, goin to make welding, cleaning and painting the underneath alot easier. 2 so dont need to get loads of mates to lift the can onto its side and back agian etc. so thats what im doin, got the metal off a mate, bit industrial but its for not alot of money. 1 ? How do u know how height to get it, is it half the width of the car and a bit or wot? Also wots the best way to lock it inplace onces its over?

    Re: Project 4x4 astra

Bit of progress on the rollover jig, been staying at the girlfriends so didnt have a chance to do anything till tonite. Well got the car almost totally on its side. calculated the height then thot it was to high so made it lower, bad mistake, its just over but touching the floor with the 1/4 panel which is annoying. but its over and can carry on with the rest of welding etc. Anyone know wots the best way to remove the undersea/paint?

    Re: Project 4x4 astra

Not really got much done in the last week, was out in the garage on fri nite, drilled the spot weld out for the rear spring platforms which took a bit of time, welded up some holes that were left, then welded up the outside of the rear pass side turrett. called it a nite at that. Also got a bit of metal in my eye which hurt like fcuk, so was at hospital on sat afternoon then to the eye specialist this mornin, real horrible feeling.

    Re: Project 4x4 astra

Small amount of work done on the car tonite, found some rust which turned out to be a hole under the pass side seat box section, so cut it out and plated it up, no before pic just after. still to buff the welds down.

Can anyone say if they have used this sealer (3m) Would u use it over the whole underside or just some bits.

    Re: Project 4x4 astra

Small update. the pins for the brake pipe brackets were cut out with the rust so welded new ones on. Then moved onto the pass inner arch and welded round that. Then onto the pass rear chassis leg to back panel, welded that up.

Small update. Recieved a purchase from ebay today. very happy with them paid be more than wanted to but havent seen them anywhere, so put a bid in. really need a good clean up. slight surface rust on discs but in good nick. 4 pot wilwoods and 325mm discs, should help with extra weight at the back end.
