Reinforced the beam today, did get a pic but for some reason it came out completely crap! . Didn't get the fronts on today, but TBH I didn't think I would. Did get the rear completely finished though. Think I may need some helper springs before too long!!

Day off today, thought I'd make it a productive one:

Ignore the bearing clearances - its just a reference for me.

Bloody hell, I've not updated this in a while!. Few updates:

The wiper motor was packing up, so I changed that for a phase 2 one. Theres an extra wire on the plug, so I'm gonna check the wiring diagram to see what it actually does. Works the same though!. PAS hose was cracking, so that got replaced with Aeroquip goodness, and the rear plate lights needed doing pretty badly so got those done too. While the scuttle panel was off I decided to spray that up too, as it was looking a bit scabby an no amount of back to black would ever fix that

    Re: Harber's Mk3 Astra GSi

After cracking a rim on a pothole, I needed new wheels!. Took ages trying to sort something out, companies kept letting me down etc.. but well happy with the end result. Vectra 288mm grooved & drilled brakes were the preferred 5 stud equipment!. Maptun spacers were used to get ET40.

Started the conversion on Thursday as I had a day off, and (kinda) finished it off today after needing 2 wheels bearings.

^^^ I actually cannot believe the state of the discs that came off the rear. These were cleaned up about this time last year!. The inner pad on each side was seized with general crap so wasn't pushing against the disc, but both pistons were free!. I intended on using the Vectra rear calipers, but I broke one caliper trying to Helicoil the Bleed nipple, but the Astra ones DO fit, and the pads were the same (I put those in). Decided I still want to use Vectra rear calipers just for piece of mind really, so I've ordered up a pair, tested and 100% working order for £24 online.

    Re: Harber's Mk3 Astra GSi

Just had an interesting check of my cars MOT history using this:

    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring...ot/DG_10020539

It was registered in Caernarfon on a personal plate till it was sold in early 2006, then it stayed in the Porthmadog area for a while where it failed 2 MOT's. It was then sold to someone in the Pembrokeshire area around late 2009, then sold again to the previous owner around March 2010. Then I bought it about November last year . It's also done only 30k in the last 5 1/2 years!.

    Re: Harber's Mk3 Astra GSi

Few things done today, but mainly gave it a bloody good cleaning as it looked pretty scabby.

A couple pics of the fitted brace, but I'm sure everyone knows what they look like. The car definitely feels tighter with it fitted too.

Decided to do a bit of budget tuning too. Throttle body was first. Take a standard Ecotec TB, and cut this bit off the spindle:

Then grind down the lip on the bore which you can see here:

And It'll look something like this:

The disc doesn't open fully, as you can't really see here  but picture anyway:

So grind this bit down, to get true WOT:

I've found it overthrows the TPS now, so I'll need to modify the mounting of that, which won't be too difficult. Drives nicer though, and definitely has a bit more pull, and it'll be a tiny bit better with the TPS mounted properly.

Couple of random things, quick pic of the fitted spacers. Really don't know why I took that lmao, and I wanted to try out the video on my new phone, so a video of it idling

Nope its an OMP one. Could have made one, but it's just easier to get one off the shelf. And don't speak to me about the minus lol.

The dealers might still do them, I didn't bother going down there TBH. I got mine from Genuine Vauxhall Car Parts - Vectra - Astra - Cavalier - Nova - Corsa. I think they came to about £35 the pair.

Couple more small things done to keep boredom at bay. Shortened the gear lever and changed the dial faces to new ones. The reason 160mph faces went on is because they read more accurately than the 140 set that was on there!.

    Re: Harber's Mk3 Astra GSi

Another addition now complete!. I had an old XE manifold sitting in the shed doing absolutely nothing, till I saw a Z20LET flange for sale on here. Z20LET/X20XE/C18XE flanges are the same, soooooo...... using my weapon of choice, I cut the XE flange off.

Then made a start modifying it:

And after a few war wounds to my back, its now on!. To be totally honest it doesn't feel massively different to drive, other than its a bit smoother midrange (rather less aggressive when the cam comes in at 4k). But for £33 I can't go far wrong lmao!

    Re: Harber's Mk3 Astra GSi

Got a few nice updates for this!

Been thinking of a few ways to spruce up the interior and make it feel a bit more performance oriented. Steering wheel was the obvious place to start, so I got myself a Vec GSI wheel off the 'bay. The badge on the airbag is a bit worn, so I might decide to change that.

And a random fact: My car pulls 377A when cranking

    Also got some of these.....

My aim is to get it in for around August and running with just a DIY ported head and a revised RPM limit, just to get it in and on the road tbf.

    Re: Harber's Mk3 Astra GSi

Went to the fast show @ Santa Pod on Sunday and thought it was a really good show tbf. Several 'chav' cars, but also a hell of a lot of performance oriented cars, and even saw a few mk3's there. There was a C20LET GSi that ran a 13.61 i believe. I decided not to go down the strip for the following reasons:

As you can see it has its fair share of issues . The oil light was now taking 2-3 seconds to go out on startup now, partially due to the shells wearing out, but decided to stick a spare Z20LET PRV in i had laying around and it seems to have done the trick for now. Stuck a washer in to try and increase pressure a little too. Whilst I was doing that I noticed this:

That'd be an exploded CV gaiter than  FFS

Gonna waxoyl the crap out of everything at the weekend now its warming up a bit, and weld a couple of holes in the rear floor near the seatbelt mounts. Known about it for ages but couldn't be bothered to sort it out till now lmao. The trip to the Pod at the weekend also didn't agree with my exhaust manifold. It's blowing again, but not from the flange. I can't find a leak so it must be under the wrap somewhere, so I'll fix that, but I'm going to make another manifold up anyway. I've decided it's not flowing quite as well as an earlier XE manifold could do.

    Re: Harber's Mk3 Astra GSi

Hugely loving the Vectra wheel!, it's odd how something so simple can give you so much more confidence in the car when cornering!. Might even connect the buttons too .

On another note, being a bit of a perfectionist with anything mechanical, I've decided to have another crack at the exhaust manifold. So armed with another flange, a couple of M18 Lambda bosses, another XE manifold and some heat wrap, I'll start again . This is the main difference thats been annoying me. The current manifold:

    The earlier type manifold:

Much nicer flowing 'Y' pieces and much nicer bends in general.

    Re: Harber's Mk3 Astra GSi

New mats chucked in today. Looks about a million times better and they are more lightweight, so 2 birds with one stone

Also got some EBC redstuff pads to stick in at some point too. EBC pads get mixed reviews, but I've found them to be pretty good once warmed up, though the main attraction this time was that the redstuffs are ceramic. Hopefully this means I won't have chunks of rusty steel embedded in my compomotives anymore!

Stuck my Redstuff pads in after work, and I have to say I'm pretty impressed so far, and they're not even bedded in properly yet!. Kinda went a bit OTT bedding them in, faded them pretty bad and turned the discs purple LMAO . Cooled down again though and turned awesome again. Might need something a bit more serious for track though.....

Will do mate!. They aint cheap but I can definitely recommend one!. It makes the car so much more positive in the corners IMO, and its smaller than the standard cack too .
