    Lotus Carlton replica track car

A few pictures of my Lotus carlton replica race car. It used to have a 24v gsi engine with a single turbo conversion but it proved to be very nose heavy and wouldn't handle very well. At the time I couldn't find a decent LET so we opted to fit a CA18DET from a 200sx. Its currently having a few bits refitted to make it road legal as it makes a good demonstrator for the company.

Hopefully it should be out on the road by the spring. Its running around 280bhp at the minute but I'm starting to build a SR20DET soon which should be good for around 450bhp when complete.

Re: Lotus Carlton replica track car

Yeah it makes a good combination and its a petty easy conversion to do. We made up the engine and gearbox mounts and had it fitted in the car in about 5 hours, fairly straightforward as the engine and box are similar in size to the 8 valve 2 litre. Only things left to do now is to finish making the roll cage once I get my pipe notcher back and get the prop balanced. I used to race it in a few 750mcc events but its getting on a bit now so time to retire it back to road use and the occasional track day!

Its not a bad old bus, it needs a bit of a freshen up because its been a bit neglected lately while I've been busy building customers cars! Will hopefully have the cage finished by the end of the weekend if my notcher comes back and I need to modify the caliper carriers on the front to space the brembos out a little further so I can fit bigger front discs. At the moment its got discs from an EVO 9 which I redrilled to match the vauxhall pcd and bored the centre out to fit the hub. I want to fit a set of
360 mm floating discs and change the rear calipers and discs for a bigger willwood setup, just a pain in the arse that I have to fit a secondary caliper for the handbrake on the rears.

Cheers all for the compliments, I've found a few more pictures as well.

I'll have a dig through my laptop and see if I can find some pictures from the start of the build.

ever since doing a 2.0 T conversion on a carlton I have never liked the straight 6 handling.

Nothing too interesting to add today. Just ordered all new suspension for both sides at the front, lower arms, track rods, drop links etc. Planning on taking the engine and subframe out this weekend to refine the engine mounts and repaint the engine bay. Hopefully all the parts I've ordered will be here by the weekend for reassembly. I'll post up some pictures of the repainted and rebuilt front end when I get a chance.

Re: Lotus Carlton replica track car

Had a big delivery today of all the parts I ordered for the front suspension. Also received the new Tomei cams and verniers, stainless manifold, elbow and downpipe,
GT3087 with external waste gate, Sard 1000cc injectors and a big pile of other bits. Going to stick with the CA now as I don't want to risk the weak valve train on the SR. Engines all out now to refurbish the front end and I'm also looking at fitting a different steering rack for a quicker action. Should be a busy weekend! I'll get some pictures up once the front end is all back together.

Going to be running omex 600 eventually. Its still on the standard Nissan loom and ECU at the moment but I'll be changing it once the rest of the car is finished. I've already got a few start up maps on my machine which should be good enough to get it running for a mapping session.

Re: Lotus Carlton replica track car

Just a quick update, pictures below.

Couple of pictures of the workshop, looking quite tidy if a little busy!

Engine and gearbox out. Just need to pull all of the loom and the fuel lines out and then set about a quick clean before a quick paint on the engine bay. I'll be dropping the subframe and all the suspension tomorow to be replaced with new parts.

New cams and verniers fitted along with a tubular manifold and 3" elbow. Not going to change the turbo at the moment as this is only a temporary engine just to get the car around while I iron out any little niggles. The GT30 that I've ordered is going onto the second engine which I'll start building over the next few weeks. Hopefully if all goes well the front end of the car will be back together by sunday night and then I'll be starting on the rear end suspension.
