    1400 Corsa Rally Car

hello all, starting a new project thread for my 1400cc corsa rally car that im aiming to have completed in time for the 2011 mull rally.

this project thread is following on from my nova project: 1400 Nova Rally Car

new corsa is currently still a bare shell:

im giving myself 10 months to finish it, only time will tell if i can actually manage it tho...

Looking forward to watching this one progress as much as the last one!

10 months..... You booked on for Mull then? :P

    Re: 1400 Corsa Rally Car

****e...maybe, i dont know yet so i'll just have to take your word for it guys

the reason im doing it is because nova parts are a nightmare to get ahold of, ive been all over the uk getting bits for my nova, even standard bits usually require 100-200 mile treks! whereas ive got a hold of 2 donor corsas within a mile of my house, you cant give them away just now! haha.

quick run down of my plans for this...

i'll be keeping the same x14xe that was in the nova, but adding ARPs, cams, pistons if required, weber 40s, most likely mbe management and a nice free 4-2-1 manifold and system.

it will run the same quaife f13 SCCR box as the nova, altho id like to upgrade from the ATB diff thats currently fitted and get a nice plate diff again, and ive got a paddle clutch sat here that never made it to the nova. i'll be running standard shafts and hubs for the time being.

suspension is from the nova again, altho i'll be getting new front top mounts, new springs all round if i get time i'll make some adjustable tie rods. ive also got a corsa c electric column that was originally bought as a nova upgrade but might make it onto this, and i'll get a fresh nova quick rack to connect to it.

brakes will be very similar to the nova, got a pair of brand new ATE 16v calipers to go on, with my 60ish stage mile ferodo ds3000s, probably going to run astra 16v rear discs again to save chopping or replacing fuel filler, and im planning on fabricating my own upright handbrake with cable facility.

bodywise its got lightened steel doors, steel tailgate and wings and i'll be taking a bonnet off one of the donor cars, steel again, no point shelling out for a fg one when i have so much other stuff to buy, got gsi bumpers and spoiler to fit, planning on ordering kevlar floor guards, tank guard and sill guards and a full 4 lamp pod on the bonnet with bumper corner pods.

not going to go too mad inside, just keep the standard dash and lighten it and im going to get myself a nice new sparco seat with head restraints.

lets see how much of that rings true in october!!!

All sounds good! Agree on the panels, soo many better places to shave time for less money.

Why 40s if you dont mind me asking?

For the handbrake, clutch master cylinders are worth a look ;-)

Will pop in and grab that bumper bar at the weekend hopefully. Do you have a spare corsa engine mount/linkage youre not using right now? I want to rosejoint mine but kinda want the finished one to go on before I remove whats there :P

    Re: 1400 Corsa Rally Car

going to go for 40s because i cant afford the extra grand for TBs. quite simply.

and i need to move away from standard management, to allow more revs to get the most out of my gearbox.

handbrake is sorted, kept the cylinder and bracket out of the nova and im gonna fabricate my own upright lever and link it to the cylinder, and tag the cables onto the rod of the cylinder or onto the front side of the lever, at whatever position suits.

bumper bar is leaned on the wall right next to the door at the back, just pop round and grab it if nobody is about. should be someone about tho. no spare linkage no sorry

weber twin 40s, linkage and fuel reg arrived at garys today. spotted a manifold on png the other week so i'll see if its still available, then need to sort out some management and see what i need in terms of fuel pumps as ive never really studied carb setups before.

looks and sounds good; there should be a fair few people to discuss fuelling requirements to get you sorted.

    Re: 1400 Corsa Rally Car

no photos to add as yet, just been stripping a donor car when ever ive not been working away and ordering parts.

got a full set of kevlar underfloor guards, kevlar tank guard and kevlar arch liners on order, got all my body panels sorted now including a gsi bumper which i also have lamp pods on order for.

currently looking for some weld in extinguisher brackets for my hand helds, hocklys list them so i'll hopefully get in touch with them soon.

other things ive got to arrange are sump guard mounts, as ive possibly got an 8mm sump plate at a good price but its got no mounts, so if i get that i'll need to mock up the engine and manifold to line up the brackets before i paint the engine bay. also got to sort my bonnet hinges, theyve been removed from the shell as the swan neck on them fouls the triangulation on the cage, so i'll need to modify a pair that dont bend down so far, should be easy enough by tacking a bar across the ends that need to remain, chop out the centre and re-weld a flat peice across the gap...

engine wise ive picked up a set of weber twin 40s, and a tony law manifold, need to find an inlet for the 40s, arps, some management and a pair of cams to use and thats probably all i'll be able to afford for now as ive still got ££££s worth of parts to buy.

will get some photos up of my kevlar stuff when it arrives.

Might be worth having a chat with Bill Falconer, was having a chat the other day and he is looking at some cost effective 1400 power ;-)

Looks like a cracker of a shell Kenny, i am a tad jealous. I have a shell and a new HH cage to go in but all the stress of fitting etc!!

    Re: 1400 Corsa Rally Car

were enjoying a bit of a storm up at the minute, and i got called at work to say my car had fallen off its stands...

bit annoying! whole car shifted about a foot to the right in the pics, and the normal type axle stands at the back fell over letting the car spin round. must have been quite a gust! i braved the weather, got a rear axle on it and towed it into my garage with my engine crane... its all safe now!

i dont know yet, nothing serious anyway. i managed to fit a rear beam with no hassle so those mounts are ok. spare wheel well and rear panel are dented but they were a bit damaged anyway as if someone had stuck a jack on them, and thats nothing thats going to worry me. it is a rally car after all and the spare wheel will hide it haha!

    Re: 1400 Corsa Rally Car

been at the car this weekend, not alot i can do except wee jobs. ive got a base model 1.2 corsa for parts now too so that will be getting stripped asap and i'll be using its loom in the rally car, last donor car had a colossal wiring loom so it was left where it was.

immediate jobs list is strip and scrap donor car number 2
    prepare and modify wiring loom
weld nuts to floorpan for kevlar floor guards (which are 3 weeks late, typical magnum motorport)
strengthen around crossmember joints and bottom arm mounts which surprisingly wasnt done
    cut and trial fit dashboard

decided to pretty much build the car before i re-do any paint, will strip it down later and paint it once all the mounts and holes are done, so with that in mind ive been mounting all the bodywork this weekend....

started at the back, nice and easy, just drilled and bolted the rear bumper and rear arches on. i quite like the contrast of the grey plastics on the yellow (and i have brand new non faded trims in the garage too) but they will most likely all end up yellow i think.

same again at the front, need to order some dome head bolts long enough to mount the corners of the front bumper, the cap heads are temporary. still need to fabricate some mounts for the front of the bumper too.

then it was onto the bonnet, but more specifically the hinges, which had been removed due to fouling on the cage triangiulation. so i welded a bit of 5mm steel across then cut off the swan neck (on the plus side of this bodge if i ever leave the pins out the bonnet will fly up an probably break my welds and fly off leaving me able to see where i am going...hopefully i'll never find out if theres any truth in that). also had to pack the pivot hole on the hinge with m6 washers and use an m6 bolt to mount them due to the oem pivot pin being about 8mm at the bodyshell end and 12mm at the hinge end.

    and the end result

also re-fitted my doors along with the handles, locks and latches, all of which work nicely. mounted my interior door handles on the side impact bars in the door seeing as how someone got a bit carried away with the lightening in the past.

aye, im not a fan but im not going to change them, no point really.

ive decided to treat myself to a nice new welder on payday too, will make things easier in the long term like floor mounts, strengthening and if i decide to gusset the rollcage.

    Re: 1400 Corsa Rally Car

still waiting on alot of parts arriving, been well and truly let down by magnum motorsport, £700 worth of bits that i was told would be with me in a week... over 6 weeks ago. unacceptable really.

on a brighter note, i visited neil thompson on friday and picked up these, which im quite excited about as ive never had anything of this spec before lmao was very good to meet neil too, and had a good wee chat

and in comparison to 16v kit

and most importantly, they fit under my 14s, just!

Very Nice mate! After my nova i wanted all the all the stuff on the corsa to be the stuff i always wanted. In the end it took sooo much longer to build but its well worth it!
Magnum eh! never heard a good word about them! Although i have heard you do get them eventually, so dont panic yet.
