    1979 chevette saloon 2 door project..UPDATE 13TH OCTOBER!!

    Here goes,

Bought this car august 09, not long after being at Billing for the first time. Always liked chevettes, something retro and really wanted a 2 door saloon, so looked long and hard for a whlie came up with this -1979 chevette, 1256cc, 2 door saloon, 1 owner from new, 43000 miles, bought it in Liverpool came from Birkenhead Vauxhall, dealer plates still on it.

FEW PICTURES AS I GOT IT.

Very clean car just been a small repair on passenger wing near the nose of it but very good evrywhere else.

Re: 1979 chevette saloon 2 door project..

So set to getting my conversion bits together for this project, list as follows--

    2.0 16v redtop
manta- gearbox, engine mounts, back axle and prop big wing sump and pickup pipe.
    45 webber carbs
    rwd 4 branch
    e36 cross member engine mounts
    alloys 8x15" revolutions
    225.50.15 tyres
    spax ajustible shocks all round
audi 80 front discs and astra gsi front cailbers

Gathered most of this up over next few months took a bit off time and money, but got there slowly.

Next i spoke to a mate off mine Fergal Mcgovern( manta drift car with m3,2 door ascona 400 , also done kadett coupe with honda s2000) about putting this yoke together, and hand building me a kit for this ie. Arching it etc.
So he gave me the go ahead and said no problem.

With most bits gathered up , started and took the inside out off it one day, very pleased didnt find any rust or rot on the floor pans(very happy).

Next step put it on my recovery lorry and went to the brothers work (KDM HIRE) to give ot a good hot wash under neath and engine bay, just so nice clean for working around.

All washed up and back onto the lorry out the road and into fergals shed.

Re: 1979 chevette saloon 2 door project..

Now we have the car on the ramp all striped out- engine out,
gear box and back end out, all bits out that needed to come out. More or less a rolling shell.

Next we offered up the new manta back axle and fitted it, changed the sump on the redtop engine, to the big wing manta sump and screwed on the manta engine mounts.

Tryed to set it in but were 30mm short on the passenger side using 5" rubber circular mount on the cross member.

So we tryed a e36 rubber engine mount that Fergal had, it lifted the engine up off the steering rack and sorted out the 30mm short on the passengerside. Job done. So got 2 new ones off these and screw them on. Problem sorted! Engine in...

Close up off manta engine mount and e36 rubber mount onto the chevette cross member.

Next we slipped the gear box on, Fergal made a new gearbox mount for it and bolted it on. The gearstick was going to come up through the orginal gearstick hole inside the car, looking good at this stage...

Screwed the 4 branch on then and again fergal made a few mods to the down pipes of it, so it all fitted in down the side off the inner wing, didnt have to touch the car at all just the 4 branch, another job well sorted.

as for me, I would've kept the original wheels (with a bit wider tyres though) to keep it more standard from the outside

If your running carbs megajolt would be the cheapest option.
