Exclamation Big power Z20LET project for a VX220

I have spent the last 6 months prepping up for a big power build for my VX220 Turbo. This project is now officially underway and being blogged here.

The objective of the blog is to try and 'give a bit back' to the community on here (and elsewhere) that have helped me in the past and maybe inspire others to try a bit of 'heavy modding' themselves.

I just hope that I have the mental, technical and financial commitment to conclude the project and that I don't crash and burn (metaphorically and literally!)

Thanks Kontraman, you can see from my 'other inspiration' page, that you were one of the reasons I started the project

    Re: Big power Z20LET project

ive just read a few pages, i think you need to look into the turbo more

im pretty sure your gt3071 with a .63 housing is the smaller of the 2 trims and will struggle to make 430-450bhp @7500 rpm and 1.7bar, it does not flow enough

    looks like a good build

Where did you get the info about the arp head studs? Never heard any bad press on them.

    Re: Big power Z20LET project

Some of your pricing is incorrect, some not enough, some too much.
There is some cheaper parts out there, I have tried most, some is absolute rubbish be careful what you purchase.
Cometic as yet do not do a head gasket for this engine yet.

Yep, oil cooler....... can go in the bin though

Any ideas on weights of a vx220? I bet it wont need BIG power to make a realy nice..... daily/track/qtr miler.
Judging by Stefans you'll need to get fab'ing some wheelie bars aswell

    Re: Big power Z20LET project

    Hi Steve,

Yes, the pricing is only a ball-park prices. I have deliberately not been specific as everyone sells at different prices and I don't want to turn my spreadsheet into a war zone by nameing exact suppliers and exact costs! The spreadsheet is only meant as an approx indicator of price so that people realise just how much the total is and what actually goes into a full on rebuild.

As for the ARP head studs, I have heard that they can work themselves lose over successive warm up/downs of the engine's life. I have read this in a couple of places and as with anything on the internet, I dunno if its true!

Thanks for your tip on the turbo spd16vastra, Steveboyslim has also said this and suspect you guys are right. I will consider moving up to a GT30R76, though Chip reckons this will be considerably more laggy...

Jack, you are right the black linear plastic thing is a an oil to water heat exhanger.

RS1, my car has had quite a bit of weight stripped out of it, so I am guessing that it is around 900 Kg on the kerb with fuel in it. If I get 450 BHP out of the engine, this make it 500 BHP/ton... we shall see !!

Some good reading in there mate. How much did the clutch set you back and what bhp is it rated to?

    Nev,

What is unsafe about drilling the main bearing journals for the oil squirt jets ?
No problem if you have the experience.
I do not use a die grinder for the channel, it is machined.
You do need to machine the holes for the jets at the correct angle to ensure they reach the underside of the piston and in the case of cylinder number one, make sure the oil will miss the timming disc (if fitted).

Was there any wear on the crank where it drives the oil pump? Had 2 xev cranks with this problem!

    Re: Big power Z20LET project

Ashtal, were did you detect wear on the crank exactly? Do you mean wear on the end main bearing? If so, I didn't detect any play as I levered it out. Inspection of all the bearings also revealed that the main bearings only had light scouring.

    Re: Big power Z20LET project

Its worn where the crank drives the oil pump on both the crank and oil pump, not the bearings tho!
