It occurred to me the Mk4 has been run almost exclusively on Sainsbury's fuel ever since I've owned it, mainly due to convenient location and Nectar points. Actually on the way home is an Esso, with handy 'Pay@Pump' which I quite like, so I filled up on SU. Tank was still about 1/4 full. This was Tuesday. Filled again today ready for PV tomorrow. After 264 miles I worked out nearly 37MPG, up from very low 30s, one tank was even 29 a few weeks back. I'd not exactly been driving gently, either. I think I'll keep it on Esso SU for a bit, then might switch to Shell. Might even try the Tesco 100RON is it?

I did try a tank of SU in the GTE once and it didn't seem to do bugger all.
I know this was ageeeees ago but hey ho, I always used to use Tesco's diesel (in my head 136.9 was a lot cheaper than Shell's 137.9) but recently I've moved to Shell, I might just be imagining things but the car seems to run better and it's a tad more economical now, I can't be sure but I think it might be about 2mpg better off, it's too early to work it out but I think it's worth the extra 60p/tank.
As for range, I struggle to get under 500 miles doing mostly town/little bit country (41-42mpg) between fill ups .

Nah I'm happy to pay a little more for dealer stuff, it is generally better quality in my experience, with the exception of water pumps from GM now having plastic impellers. Like the First Line ARB drop links. Sure they're half the price of dealer stuff, but I've gone through a set in under 20k. Next time I'll get GM ones.

    Mince, mince mince.

Today I set about connecting a lead to the aux input of the stereo so that one can plug one's MP3 player device in and not be subjected to what music is stored on the USB drive. Same as before, removed glove box, fed cable through, plugged it in, job's a goodun.

There's enough slack to lay the player on the passenger seat to enable track skipping etc.

You have to enable this mode in the options menu with the head unit off:

Amusingly, what I though was a dead pixel, which doesn't usually get used...:

Turned out to be some poxy little creature that's got in there and left it's little skellington for me to look at:

Lovely! Also today, whilst the exhaust heat shield wasn't in a desperate condition:

It's not quite as nice as this one, from a not-particularly good condition Vectra SRi in the scrapyard:

Why this one's retained it's shine is a mystery. But it's a mystery on my engine now, so that's cool.

Most stuff from Euro is OEM supplier stuff, cam belt kits etc.

Just punch you reg in on their site and take a look.

I know what you mean though about 'budget' parts. ARB drop links for an 2008 Vectra today 4.68 plus vat each!

Talk about engine bling.. that shine'll take your retina out in strong sunlight.

I suppose enjoyment of the aux feed will depend whether One's MP3 Or One's Missus MP3 is connected ) I don't think I've ever wanted to willingly crash a car any other time than when my wife happened to feed 'one of hers' into the CD player..

    Re: Mk4 Astra SRI

On just over 116k now, the Mk4 continues to provide flawless service. I did have the handbrake seize on on a couple of cold mornings, so I might look into renewing the cable. I've used it for just under 3 weeks in a row which is unusual for me as I provide 'front line support' so can have 3-4 days out a week for weeks in a row. So the last month it's done 1100 miles. Only seem to be getting 33MPG though. It was utterly utterly minging this morning. Had to wash it twice.

Few weeks ago I whilst I was looking at the frozen handbrake I thought I'd look into a slight knocking/ rattling that I thought could have been where I'd been messing with the back box. Had a wiggle about and noticed the rear shock was moving as it bolts to the car. Bush was slightly er... tired. £80 for a pair from the dealer, so got that ordered up.
    Ooh that looks tired:

    Knackered!

Even comes with new bolts for some reason! Mmm, new stuff.

Also when I first fitted the stereo I managed to scrape the **** out of the dash which really annoyed me. Then a further scratch when removing the sat nav from the screen annoyed me further so I looked on eBay and found a brand new silver/ black (for a coupé?) one from a Pentagon main dealer:

    Re: Mk4 Astra SRI

So the radiators been leaking. Had to top it up the other day. This is not on. So I bought a new one, £81.60 from our local place. Set to:

Remove bumper (unclip foglights and temp. sensor) and support beam behind (unclip loom), you're left with this:

Behind the o/s fog light is a handy drain tap, so I lost virtually no coolant!

    Rad is definitely tired.

Unbolt the A/C condenser, lift up out of brackets and you can hinge it out on the pipes and let it sit on the floor. Then you can undo and remove these brackets to free off the rad:

Disconnect top, bottom and bleed off hoses and unplug front and rear fans, and unclip the fan looms to free the rad off, then lift it up to get the feet out of the bottom brackets (which can even be unbolted if needed) then feed it down and out, with the rear fan still attatched. Leaves you with this; a good time to attend to any exhaust issues. I got Sharon to polish the manifold heat shield again.

Old rad much worse than first thought.

Swap the fan over to new rad. I also sprayed wax onto the edges to slow corrosion. Refit is reversal of removal!
