That is the same engune as in mine, what benefit do you get when you block EGR valve, do i do it or will it fail MOT on emmissions test? Does it improve MPG or does it increase 20% HP??

That was an emissions test on mine months after I blocked off the EGR valve. I didn't do it for any other reason than I don't like them. lmao Your inlet tract gets full of ****, blocks everything up and I just have a really irrational hatred of them. lmao Plus they shag themselves after so long and start to give all sorts of strange symptoms, so now it doesn't matter if it stops working.

308's are a must... and done cheaply too! Only need the carriers and the larger discs.

Looks like a good buy though - wish i'd considered one instead of a 2.2... probably wouldn't be £1700 lighter in the pockets for an engine swap lmao

Re: Oh Look, Another New Astra...

EGR is only really "used" at part load "cruise" conditions.... ie if you spend your life at 60-70mph (circa 3-4Krpm for most gm engines) then the EGR valve will live open and clog up the inlet side of things
So blocking it up will do sweet FA to the MOT emissions

I miss my SRI loved that car. I'd still have mine had the F17 not been so growly. Infact I do regret selling that car.

You'll do well with a MK4 Dan, having had several in the family and countless vans froms the old mans work they are a cracking buy.

feedback? I seriously hope you are not talking about steering feedback.

In terms of communication and feedback the steering on the mk4 Astra is light years ahead of the mk2 and mk3 Astra.

I dont quite get the whole "MK4's are newer therefore crap and dull" stuff from folks.

OK I've found it near impossible to "safely" get lift off oversteer in the 1.8 since the throttle is so heavily damped, but in just about every other aspect its a riot to drive. Point to point on country lanes etc its about 90% as fun as my vx, and its running std everything!!! lol If anything I'd say inside its no better in terms of refinement than a MK3 astra, but just looks nicer imho of course.

Re: Oh Look, Another New Astra...

Well I've done about 300 miles so far, and I can feel it's getting quicker, definitely more responsive pulling away. I seriously think it's never been driven hard before so does need an Italian tune up. On the test drive I was a bit underwhelmed at the straight line power.
My 47 mile trip to work is twisty A roads to Winchester (usually with Sharon driving) then very straight-with-ocasional-bends A roads to Salisbury. On straight comparison with the GTE and Mk2, it can easily match their speeds through some of the bends that I've been keeping a watch on, noticeably a lovely fairly tight S bend on a hill that I can just do at 60 on a dry day and a tight sphincter. The SRI managed it fine which impressed me considering standard suspension and nasty tyres up front.
I certainly wouldn't call it dull. The major difference is the almost total lack of any noise from the tyres, wind or engine unless you're above 3k.
Whilst waiting to pick Sharon up I sit in a pay and display bay keeping an eye out for parking dudes. With the A/C on, of course, I'm amazed how totally smooth the engine is on idle. I mean I'm no stanger to X20XEVs, No-SPec had a 80k mile one in it, and it ran spot on, but the idle is totally vibration free, it's unreal. I feel like I'm in a hire car from work. Must be something to do with the engine mounts or something. Not had idle this nice since the Saab.

Oh and I've found a fault. Driver's window doesn't auto-up. Auto downs, and the passenger is fine both ways. The total closure works fine though.
But I did find the little leather sleeve for the front of the radio.

Re: Oh Look, Another New Astra...

I will give Mk4's a bit of credit... as standard they handle really well! Really suprised myself a few times! I think lowering it has ruined mine somewhat... Vauxhall really did get it right from the factory

I'd go back to a Mk3 with an XE any day of the week though, I personally can do without the comfort thing (probably because my aircon is broke again lmao)
