Re: Ronnie's project RWD :D - mk3 astra gsi turbo rear wheel drive ;)

not much of an amazing update, but was under the cav today (trying to) sort the clonking, and the rear hubs caught my eye so i though id have a look. i already knew the cavalier gsi's had a different floor and rear suspension to a 'regular' cavalier, the same as the 4x4s. this is relivent because i want to keep Project RWD 4stud so i can keep the F1's as the calibra turbo rear end is 5stud, so i thought i'd have to have a good hunt and find a rare cavalier gsi 4x4 braking somehwere to steel the hubs, but as my investigating took me to the normal gsi's rear hubs...

popped the plastic cover off and found driveshaft bolt holes

so any gsi, or any caibra im gessing, rear hubs will be fine

and took down the calibra floor down to the unit just to check, and the calibra turbo 4x4 and calibra FWD rear ends are the same

but unfortuanitly shant be able to get any progress this week as working alll week

now thats some good news bud. So are the trailing arms/hubs/suspension on your cav the same as a 4x4 cali? apart from the 4/5stud.

yea it would seem the only difference between the FWD IRS rear end and the 4x4 rear end is they didnt fit the rear diff and driveshafts, everything elsde is there, looks lke all the diff mounts and everything are in the subframe too.

wonder why theres not more calibra's and cav gsi's converted to 4x4s

Because no-one takes stuff apart and sees for themselves anymore, they rely on forums for information. No-one actually gets dirty any more mate, they just sit here like I am, tip-tap, tip-tap, Ł200 for a tuning box for the Mondeo? I'll have one of those. lmao

^^^ I think the same, Im young but I like to investigate things for myself tho. I can see why so many people come on here and read how to fit a c20xe into what ever, I know thats old school now but its the same princable.

The rear end is basically the same all round, but the differences are up front. The subframe, bulkhead and forward tunnel are totally different, thats why its a pain in the ar5e job to convert. Unlike your build, the back end is easy!

Nice work by the way, small progress, but all a step in the right direction, keep it up!

Checkout Peachperformances build thread if its still on here as he did a 4wd retrofit to his cally and he had to modify the front a lot. Worth a read though. And can confirm the car is still going strong to this day.

Re: Ronnie's project RWD :D - mk3 astra gsi turbo rear wheel drive ;)

managed to get a few hours down the unit tonight so i can have a little chop with the other new bit of floor in

i got this bit of calibra purely for cosmetic reasons, as i'd hacked the **** out of the 4x4 one in this area, so i only need the top skin

    drilled off the rest

so i didnt end up cutting too much out again i drew the line of the floor in the sierra tunnel with a specialist tool lmao

started choipping down the other calibra floor

    and the calibra 4wd floor

    and calibra floor fixed

just had to extend the top little bt of the sierra floor as i wasnt long enough, tacked in

and started welding it all in, but then ran out of gas gutted

so this is how far i got

but this is the final bit then the floor is finished

so will get some gas tomorrow and carry on when i get time again
