In Australia we have to get an engineers report (surely most places too ), to say that motor, brakes suspension etc are all up for it, cost about 400 maybe more. Mine is booked in for next tuesday, hopefully the exhaust is quiet enough for the laws here, should be fine.
Well, just driving the car now, waiting for the powersteering pump bracket to arrive...IMO power steering is a must, some say it is for "buffty gays" ; this is not a term that gets used here in oz but i get the picture. The feel at the wheel is crap, heavy turn in then light then really heavy mid corner, if bufty gays dont like that then I guess I might be "bufty" (too scared to google it for meaning now lmao).
At this point I am just driving and listening for weird noises and seeing how she goes. The home brand 2" -2 1/4" exhaust is kinda noisy and has some interesting hums at different rpm but its down the list to change. I deally if you had the money I would recommend getting a tuned exhaust to get it right first go, we didnt go that way and it took 8 hours to get the 3 mufflers joined and clear of all points, thats the best we had available.
The other thing to say is for conversion I think the best way is to use the 2l driveshafts from the calibra and buy conversion hubs, forget the driveshafts, waste of money as the equal length calibras are better than the unequal conversion ones in terms of torque steering. not to mention the wrong size! If you need to shorten the lhs just get the angle grinder and cut a groove and lop the end of, honestly by the time you get to this even if you have never done much mech work before ( as like me ) it will be a simple and very satisfying thing to do.
Gotta do a video of her driving soon!
Update:
Got the engineers certificate done, all good $350
Weighbridge for new weight 980kgs $16.50
Blue slip with change of details $59
Rta to ammend records $3
So all done then!![]()
Also, have fitted the powersteering and changed the coolant temp sensor too as it was throwwing the ecu out of whack big time, thankfully it was a tiny $15, even the guy behind the counter was shocked!
I have taken a vow of mechanical abstainence for 3 months too
True tho, car has been a black hole soaking up all my time.... just gotta fit the chip that is coming in the mail![]()
excellent. Means you can get out and enjoy the car now.
Also, rang my insurance company and they were like "So, a different engine, from another car...so what? You didn't add a turbo? thats fine" There was no increase in premium from the $550 au dollars for comprehensive. How goods that!
Will post some pics and a video in the new year. Cheers and Enjoy your Christ-mas.
Some taken last night
More to Come!
looks well, fair play to you,
that calibra has to be the worst spray job ive ever seen on a car :O
Pics are very cool.
I'm louder than gods own revolver and twice as shiney.
Been quiet on the spanners lately untill a loud clunking noise promted some investigation:
After replacing conrod bearings and no change in the noise the head came off to find this..
So while I was there in went new lifters too, a different cold air intake, re-did the throttle body ecotec adapter plate...
Prepared to engine surfaces with the shapening stone and worked flat as by the metal ruler. A bit of paint thrown around too, the red has gone from red top.
All back together again!

Aint it a bugger when your headgasket goes like that. When mine went i thought i'd thrown a bearing or two as well, the rattle was hideous![]()
Please ensure all events queries are pm'd in my direction. Please be patient and i will get back to you very soon.
yeah the noise was crazy loud, i thought it was broken bits everywhere...
must say the motor is running way better than before with new lifters and fresh vacumn and injector o-rings etc... wwaaaahhhhh
gotta sort out a bit of oil in the coolant overflow tank.. hopefully just some oil in the block from when I preped the block... fingers crossed.
Been wanting to reduce the camber on the rear wheels for a while to reduce the dreaded understeer...heard about using shims to change the angles...
Undo this...
And these
Made my shim out of old exhaust gasket...I used double thickness but may be going back to single. Overlap the holes so you just need to drill the other one out when its in place.
Inserted and drilled (its the top 2)
Before,
After,
Now the front has more camber than the back, finally, even with a camber kit on the front.
Took it for a spin and guess what, I got oversteer repeatedly at the off camber round about near my house, a sensible mature type of oversteer though.![]()
