No My man car, no Vauxhall tat here thank you!

Well, as no doubt many will be aware, I purchased a modified 5 turbo about 2 years ago after saying I wouldn't have another one; my first lasted 1.5 hours, my second just 26 miles.

Anyway, my mate was moving to America and put his R5 up for sale, his had always been really reliable for a big boost R5GTT and had just had a rebuild due to the bottom end knocking.

I purchased her and she looked all pretty for a 16 year old and ready for me to spank her senseless (tissues away lads! ).

When I bought it;
EP Motorsport race engine with lightened + balanced bottom end.
EP Motorsport EN24 steel liners.
Polished and ported head with 3 angle valve seats.
EP Motorsport stage 6 T28/T3 roller-bearing turbo with alloy T3 actuator
EP Motorsport race cam
EP Motorsport Group A carb
Forge twin core alloy intercooler and alloy carb top
Bosch Group A fuel pump
In-car adjustable boost from 15 – 30 psi
Armtech Full throttle shifter with adjustable rev limiter
Custom stainless steel exhaust system with 4” tailpipe
Group A dump valve
Copper core radiator
Green cotton air filter
Silicon boost and coolant hoses
Low temp stat and fan switch
Group A engine mounts
High output starter motor and alternator
NGK spark plugs with competition leads
Full Koni adjustable suspension, lowered 40mm
Rear torsion bar lowered 40mm to match
OMP strut brace
285mm big brake conversion
Group N clutch

All was funky dory for about 5 weeks, I somehow got done for speeding in it whilst running it in. Presumably due to the sound it makes? It isn't exactly subtle shall we say. All the time I kept saying that it should really have been rebuilt with a smaller main carb jet fitted to help the rings bed iun rather than the obscene one it had previously. It turned out thats what had been done, neither myself nor my mate, the previous owner, were aware of this. Disaster; Enter stage left.

There is a rare sight, an R5 on the hard shoulder with the bonnet up...

Sat at the side I spotted the RAC dude do a compression test, he didn't look impressed. He went for a container of oil to do a leak down and my arse fell out, I spotted that it got to 30 PSI on no3. Times were bad, I was waiting to start my new job and had about 5 to my name.

So, Lee H called round and helped me pull my head off (I struggle with 2 hands! ) and we found this;

Piston should be ok with some chemical metal...

Sump didn't look too clever...

Steel liner (scrap as it is 16 thou out of round!) ...

An old one from when me and 'Nemeis the bastard' were working on the old girl (she has spent nearly 2 years on the drive!)

Turbo off...

Oh no...

Time for the head to be built up

Which included swapping studs over from the old head...

Springs going on

Inlet and exhaust manifolds live on the same side of the cylinder head too - relic technology. No keys to start this baby, you rub sticks together!

Re: My man car, no Vauxhall tat here thank you!

Yes, I have mirror polished the piston crowns!

Progress was very slow on the car for a number of reasons, mainly some twat that I bought a head off decided to not post it and con me out of money, plus I can only work on the cars in summer months due to my skin but last summer I was in cast for over 3 months and another 3 months of physiotherapy. Remember kids, breaking your wrist and elbow isn't a good idea.

After throwing a rod through my Mums engine I had to sort that first, so it is only the last few days I have been working on the old girl...

Todays pictures after me and my Dad started on it at about 9am.

Nipped to get some new tyres until I go to EARS Motorsport to get my cut slicks. Needed some for the MOT on Tuesday, although still a few things to do first.

As it is 2 years since I pulled it apart, I couldn't remember where a lot of pipes went, I thought I had kept them in a ready to fit manner but I must have jumbled them up...

A quick ask on the Renault Turbo Owners Club soon had me sorted...

So she kicked into life;

Hosed up;

Covered in more dirty thumb marks than Craig G's porn mags;

I had an incident the other week when working on my Mums car, the bonnet stay on the Reggie broke, the bonnet flew forward and smashed the headlight;

I needed replacements. Yes I know they need painting but it can wait;

My other one which has a cold air feed on it, not my cup of tea but I have a spare Corsa Morette lense which fits;

R5GTT with 'tard eyes;

My schoolboy error. When working on my Mums car I went back under and said 'Make sure the sump plug is in, sure I will forget that one day!' Roll on a few days and I was correct, not used to working on cars in the morning!

Lucky it is only cheap dogsh*t 20/50 mineral oil that used to be 3.49 at Kwik Save. Just cheap toss to bed the rings in, before it goes on the rollers at Noble on Friday, assuming it passes the MOT obviously!

Big thanks to those that have helped; Lee H on helping to take the head off, Nemesis on the numerous time he has been down only for us to be hit by numerous hurdles and especially my old man who has been a god send the last few weeks and really has been responsible for getting my appetite back these last few weeks, I have enjoyed it rather than seeing it as a chore.

More updates no doubt, especially as I now have the following;

Quickrack
50 BHP Nitrous kit.
Gary Poole ported head.
T28 to replace the T28/3 that got f*cked.
Morette lamps.
Lumenition leads.
etc.

Cheers matey!

They are old antiquated bollocks to be honest but they have such a distinctive sound and like with the cars themselves, you either love them or hate them. I got more pleasure from this starting up than I did my Corsa Turbo. It just sounds lovely!

Thanks Paul. (You aren't such a bad c*nt for a Baggies fan! )

It comes up ok when you do but the tailgate is f*cked (has been for the 8 years I have known the car) and the drivers door is caved in from slamming it shut when the lock was playing silly buggars. I think I will wait until I have sourced a grill, door, tailgate and bonnet (got damaged in the headlight incident) and sprayed them until I clean it properly. It may get a sponge treatment but that is it, I won't waste my time with the Porter Cable etc. More interested in how it runs TBH as if she keeps me happy I may invest in a full respray in either original white or that Nissan Micra green that I throw one off over! Seen a stunning R5 on RTOC in a sort of Caribic Blue/Green colour which also appeals.

For an 18 year old car, I can't grumble really though, it's an honest example rather than something which has been tarted up.

Cheers! Not as much as I do. I bet I have spent a minimum of 1500 sorting it? Could have bought another full car for that!

I have always said they are the best cars in the world when they work. 'When' being the operative word. Nemesis is banned from MIG, I still speak to him every few days. I am sure he will mince at a track day or 2 in the 5 and provide a comedy write up. No humour on MIG - Exterminate, exterminate...

True but at the end of the day they are basically a 50 year old engine with a turbo bolted on. They have so many of the worst characteristics you could imagine; inlet and exhaust manifolds on the same side, inlet above the exhaust, non-hemispherical head, push rod etc, etc,etc. They still get the numbers though and thats from a 1397cc which many people forget. Compare the quarter times, numbers don't lie.

Corsa is on the back-burner, it's about fun not straight line speed.

Rather have a turbo and a single carb than a set of twin 40's on an XE!

No, it's an Aston Martin DB5 like in the bond films. Do you want to buy it?

how much boost are you running now waynle? with a t28 and 1400cc of strangled cylinder head, you should be able to see more pressure than my Discovery's tyres.

It will see more pressure than your japs eye ever has...

...I am sitting it on the driveway for eternity!

I will aim for a moderate 22 PSI to start with, note the big daft actuator is no longer present! Just so I am not tempted to say 'give it 30 PSI' come Friday (assuming it passes on Tuesday?)

Andy (ANDYRACER) loves the noise, he reckons it is a lot louder than his Blitz Nur-Spec Celica!
