i am tring to catch up some of thing that you have done.
maybe i'll ask too much question's, because of i do not understand too much abot electronics, electric current, and car computers.
1. what is that fluid (liquid) that you used for the valve head ?>
what is it >? and what is it doing ? http://img386.imageshack.us/img386/9919/58711337mw9.jpg
2. little bit no connect to the matter but,
i'm look out that your tigra wear's 17 inch, how mach you lowerd her ?
many thanks..

| Re: Tigra c20xe to turbo on Megasquirt wip - lots of pics! Lol Jack - aint it a bit too ghetto for pcformat xD..
hello Aditi!
thank you for the good comments
the liquid in the first photo is just washing-up liquid,I used it and not water because its thick,so less likely to escape past the valves (which would make the test less accurate)..
and the wheels are 18", and I don't know how much it is lowered, but I do know its lower at the front than it was before the 2l engine xD.. I guess must be 40mm?! Its too high a the back though,i don't like it .. I hope that helps!!
A little picless update - spoke today with mr ashley of Ashley exhausts, who convinced me that i only need 1 silencer at its a turbo, and he'll make the centre section longer so it joins straight to thw downpipe (its normally a cat-back system). About 200squids all in-not bad will have that on saturday!
also bought a charge cooler core off a chap on here who is a legend, and won a fooken big aircon rad off an impreza for pennies on EvilBay-just need a pump, hose and reservoir, and the testing will begin ..
might sort out some links or piccies wen i get off the iPhone xD woopwoop!!

| Re: Tigra c20xe to turbo on Megasquirt wip - lots of pics! Now that im at the Frankenstein:
This i s the rad i won: its 29'' wide if my measuring is correct, it will just fit in behind the bumper with only the smallest trimmage required. That's if it passes my tests . I have a feeling the pump will have to take a hell of a beating to push the water round this thing, as it's made for cooling gas. We shall see.
And i thin k the charge cooler is quite large itself - apparently it's twice the size of the pace device according to markyG. Whilst i didnt win this one, turns out the devil's got a few more lying around
Pump-wise, i'm fe eling this one right now - the ''Premium GP1392'' in line caravan pump - the amps seem about right for how much it will need to pump, the stainless impeller sounds good, and the specs are ok too, for how cheap the thing is (about £28 on EvilBay)
As for the reservoir, might have to see what i can get away with. Though ideally, I want a fairly slim, tall and upright one (allright Jack ), so it will also act as a swirl pot in a way. Might have to resort to an ally-finned one for a PC system for £20 or so, though i have a feeling it wouldn't last in the 'bay.
Any other suggestions peeps ?? |

I should have a very large forehead by now, from all the bashing my head on the desk when things dont work properly or doing that too much >
haha!
Don - i declare post war
..
I bought the hose, pump and some hose clips today so if all goes well and i get stuck in with uni work i should have some time for progress this weekend (and if everything gets delivered) |

Oh, so it's all my fault , you've got me beat with the MS build, I pay someone else to build and install, then I just try to map it, more power to your elbow.
How's the carbon bonnet thing coming along? |

| Re: Tigra c20xe to turbo on Megasquirt wip - lots of pics! haha, i blaime you tom for getting me hooked on spending money on this old chariet
The bonnets - yeah i did make a few, but ran out of time due to uni so didnt finish them off sold a couple (made losses as they weren't finished), and the last one got made into an undertray for my engine bay .. I did gain quite a bit of experience with the stuff though .. At some point if i keep the car long enough (and have enough cash) i'll be giving it a whole carbon front end, should be pretty cool - i haven't seen anyone else do it .
A little update - i got my pump and jubilees the pump looks pretty weedy tbh BUT it seems to perform quite well, and is light - so that's a bonus!!. If this thing is to stay in the engine bay then i have to put it through it's paces to make sure it's up to scratch. So knocked up this little experiment:
that looks like smoke but it's just the slow shutter speed doing its thing:
drawing the right current . i worked out it's using about 40 watts, which isn't a lot of drain on the alternator
and one more - i like these slow shutter speed pics
and a comedy snap: 15 minutes, HA is all i have to say to that.
So for a little 'burn in' test, i ran it for over 3 hours non stop and nothing's changed - current draw is the same, it wasn't even luke warm, and it still sounded the same (best described as an 'annoying' noise). I did notice the water was warmer, as it's cooling the pump. But only noticed that because it was chilly to start with. I don't have any way of measuring the flow or pressure, but it was still pulling itself along in the water as hard as at the start.
Next, when i receive the rad, piping and the charge cooler itself i'll run it overnight. If it doesn't blow up then, all is good .
I have seen references to this pump on a few sites online about diy chargecooling set ups, and they're good, so we'll see
ciao!! |

| Re: Tigra c20xe to turbo on Megasquirt wip - lots of pics! A small update on todays mincings !! Mr Brian Ashley called yesterday saying they won't get my exhaust to me by saturday (today) so no real progress just have to measure the exact OD of the downpipe and get back to him and he'll sleeve the system so it'll clamp straight on! One consideration though, is the lack of a flexi section - so a good excuse to stiffen the engine mounts . And i'll have to get some stiff exhaust hanger rubbers too, don't know where from though ?! anyone?
Ok, for todays messing about : went to the po to pick my air-con rad and had a roll of pvc hose waiting for me the rad is perfect - wide, light, thin and not very tall - should fit perfectly in front of the standard rad. Also the in&out pipes are conveniently 1/2" od ..
the only gripe - i blew through it and fook me it takes some effort, which is obviously due to it being a gas cooler (not water).. (word of advice - make sure the ends are clean - refridgerant does NOT taste good )..
So at this point i was a bit , after plumbing it in, turns out it's fooken ace
rad:
hose:
plumbage:
closer:
current - a small drop. So obviously it's working harder due to extra backpressure (?) but from the data off the website it equates to about a 2-3m head.
and a comedy snap: 29" wide . Id say that's quite a lot of cooling capacity as far as water is concerned
As you can see the water is coming out the other end at quite some rate, so it's plenty strong enough
It's very difficult to work out how the internal channels are arranged on this rad, which would be handy to know. BUT guessing by the backbressure, it's probably quite a long path. It took about 4 seconds for water to start coming out the other end, which is a much more efficient design for this purpose than a simple water radiator.
This is because a water rad is basically 2 tanks on the ends of the core. So most of the water will take the shortest path back to the outlet. In this case (i'm assuming by the priming time and backpressure) that water is zig-zagging around the rad.
This means that there will be a lot more heat transfer to the rad PER PASS. At the expense of the power used to pump the water.
As a quick experiment - i used a heat gun to heat up the rad with water stationary inside it (pump off). I dont know the temps, but i could just barely touch the rad. Then i switched the pump on, and the rad went from barely touchable hot to cold in about 3 seconds . Obviously this heat is absorbed by the water in the reservoir, but what it DOES prove, is that the heat transfer from the water to the rad and vice versa is VERY quick, making a very efficient system, which is perfect !
Obviously these observations are subjective and not factual, but what i've seen makes me very confident it's going to work brilliantly. As long as the chargecooler core displays the same efficency in transferring the heat from the charge air to the water flowing through it
And until the pump goes bang . What i'm thinking is making some kind of temperature controlled on/off system for the pump, with a manual override, so it's reducing it's continuous on time. TBH the weak point in the pump is the seals i think, not the motor. Motor failures happen from overheating the coils - which is not happening here.
Anyway, hope i've given you lot some good reading as always, feel free to constructively criticise |

| Re: Tigra c20xe to turbo on Megasquirt wip - lots of pics! Like the testage. Like I said via PM, I think the water will find its way round the rad better than gas will, you could always use a clutched mechanical aircon pump instead of an electrical one, and just use the megasquirt to engage/disengage the pulley when needed.
