Hi Rob,
I have bought the quaife gear lever and turret for my corsa rally car.
Has your exhaust tunnel been strengthened for the lever?? Also does the lever bolt into the original holes left from the previous gear lever?
Just wondering how much of a nightmare it is to get it in!! lol.
Ive got the linkage rods from hockleys and i've got a feeling they may not reach the turret! How many rods do you have on yours?
Rob, thats a cracking spec. car your building. Love the attention to detail, will be good to see it out on the stages hopefully soon.
On the top picture, the black metal bar that goes from one side of the car to the other did you keep it in? Was looking to see if i needed to keep it or not when rebuilding my car as only appeared to be something to cable tie the loom onto.
There are three rods, a short one from gear lever to adjuster (part of the lever - not seperate), a long one to bulk head and a medium one from bulk head to turret top. The tunnel wont be strengthened and it bolts just in front of the original holes. It goes through the bulk head to the left of the original hole. Im yet to start fitting it yet but ill get pictures on here as soon as i do.
Thanks!! Don't think ill be out soonMy first son is due to be born in April and my job is also at risk as the company is getting rid of 530 jobs!!! Ill not be selling it as it don't cost me owt sat in the garage.....but who knows.
I see you are cracking on with yours and doing a good job!
Yeah the black bar can be removed but I'm keeping it as it has had extra mounts welded on the it for the steering column (not necessary though).
All the best
Rob

Gonna say, I ditched the black bar of mine in favour of the weight loss lol
Congratulations on your son Robert, you didn't mention it when I saw you![]()

Cheers Dave. I didn't know mate! Found out a couple of weeks later!!
I was going to say, look at your build diary as i knew you have removed it and had some good pictures.
You are quite good at taking pictures - you should do it as a job!lmao

I'm just the bitch for my wife mate; she's the pro photographer, not me. I'd rather sit at a desk all day and play on MIG lmao
I'd like to pop over in my trackshed once some better weather comes in, let you have a go and see what you think of the setup etc. I'm sure you can recommend me some ways to improve things on it![]()

Then had a go at fitting up the gear linkage.
Got all bolted up and then found out i couldn't get gears. It turns out one bolt is too long and catches on the steering rack mount and another bolt catches on the gearbox case. One can be cut shorter but the other is gonna cause problems. Any way got fed up and ill have another look another day......

Can you not run roll pins instead of the bolts like neo (iirc) has done.
Back in the scene
Yeah i was just going to have a look at his build thingy, i knew i had seen another way somewhere - cheers Rick

Rob if its any consolation i used the roll pins as rick mentions and it helps but if your using a F20 with the gear rods that hocley supplies your in for a rough ride as i tried about 40 combinations and could'nt get all the gears and ended up making a rod of my own lenth for the engine bay side, hockly told me there aint a kit for the F18/F20 box so i had to improvise and try a few things, idid take the measurements though if you need them...

you could re drill the rods and joints 90 degrees to where they are now, or possibly use button headed bolts instead, depends how much clearance you need

Im going to try a few things tomorrow Lee. It doesn't need much clearence.

button heads may be the way forward then, ime you do have to get those bolts fairly tight to avoid any slop in the linkage, so if you grind the heads make sure you leave enough to get some good torque into them, i'm sure you'll sort it though, teething problems suck!

eeek im runnign an f20 dog box too and my rods are from hockleys. there is an f20 rods on his site now. rob youll have to let me know where you finally position the lever? do you push it forward until it cant go forward no more or whats the crack? lol
I never had the problem of catching bolt heads and stuff as i used roll pins from the off set, what i found was i used the standard rod kit from hockly's and they wont work 100% with the F20 box in a corsa, as the last rod section is too short, which stopped me getting all the gears, i would get say 1,2,3,4 but no 5th or rev, with adjustment i i got reverse but lost 1st and 2nd etc, then i rang them and they said it will have to be a custom rod lenth, so i bought some rod and ends andd made my own up, and it worked spot on, the turret is in a different place slightly or something, my rod ended up being longer than the standard one mine was 120mm shoulder to shoulder or 161mm end to end, which if i remember is 20mm or so longer than the one supplied in the kit...
i also ended up extending the rod in the car as the lever was too far forward for me to reach for my seat position, i could hardly reach the gear knob when strapped in the car another 100mm went on directly in front of the lever in mine... so i might of well made my own rods up in the end Rob,,,
But now ive got a nice shift and all the gears so i am happy, hope yours is plug and play but mine was'nt mate... might help you out if its not with what i have done though..
its weird because when i swapped from a f13 to the f20 i thought i would have to mod the rods, but i havent had to, it just works![]()

Thanks again
Rob

ooh strange ill let you know how i get on with mine....thanks for the pics rob these are much help!
Yeah weird that, mine on solid mounts as well so not sure if that makes a difference
Ok then, had another go today.
Got the bolts undone and then got busy with the hacksaw. Bolted them all back up but one as i think ill definitely need a roll pin.
Cant get any gears... I can only pull the gear stick backwards, so i wondered if it was a gearbox problem. I took the turret off had a look, all ok. Put the turret back on and tried to select a gear by hand without the linkage attached and got them all.
so back to the linkage.
Measured the short rod and its 145mm total length and 103mm shoulder to shoulder. So im guessing its too short. Having a longer one would also solve a clearance problem.
Hockly does sell a F20 linkage rod. Dont suppose you have any rod left over Rob?
Thanks
Rob
