Re: Project Deathtrap: Jack's 1.2 Corsa

ROTFPMSL @ vauxhall prices, hope you laughed when they quoted that, i know i laughed when they quoted £21 for a downpipe sealing ring, which is £2 in the factors.

www.autovaux.com gets my vote, they are usually genuine and under half dealer price.

Re: Project Deathtrap: Jack's 1.2 Corsa

Great mincing Jake!

I'd imagine all that coking is normal on these engines as they are plagued with crappy valve guide issues & EGR blocking problems from new. Junk the std ECU & fit some budget Megasquirt with either bike TB's or a Mantzel inlet IMO.

Does anyone know definitively if the guides are replaceable?

Re: Project Deathtrap: Jack's 1.2 Corsa

the guides are replaceable yea but i found it hard to get hold of them when i needed some, could only find brass ones, in the end i took it to an engine builders as they need to be heated up and pressed out

I'll let the photos speak for themselves.

Caps are numbered! Ultimate sex!

As bent as Stu_CDX.

The test to see if valves are bent. Roll them down the side of a bench! Clever dad!

While we were mincing about, we had a visit from Uncle Andy, who told us his lad has finished making his 4x4, apparently called "Mitsimog". I've just Googled for it and it's bloody everywhere!

Some photos of it!

Re: Project Deathtrap: Jack's 1.2 Corsa

Nah, they're all ****ed.

We were going to have the exhaust valves out too but we ran out of daylight. I need a proper spring compressor anyway, ours wasn't long enough. Had to improvise with a socket and a magnetised screwdriver to fish the collets out with.

Re: Project Deathtrap: Jack's 1.2 Corsa

I saw the belt damage but didnt realise it had fasiled!
Is it a good idea to use some grinding compound on the new valves and spin them in the guides, to help seat them better in the holes/guides,
ive seen this done on a little 2 stroke engine, not sure if its a good idea though

bent as STU_CDX

Are you not better off just going for a complete low mileage head to save you from buying new Guides / Valves & keeping the cost down ??

Re: Project Deathtrap: Jack's 1.2 Corsa

Yeah, but then there's the feeling that a second hand head is an unknown, whereas a head we've built up, I'll know it's good.

I was tempted with another head, but now we've started taking this one apart, I am really enjoying it and looking forward to getting it all back together. Guides look alright!

Re: Project Deathtrap: Jack's 1.2 Corsa

Fair enough mate

However those valves have take a bit of a hit so I would really think about changing the guides just to be on the safe side - then you know it'll be 100% ok

yeh its good to grind the valves on any 4-stroke engine rebuild, course 1st then work your way down to fine, are you sure it was a 2-stroke u seen some1 grinding the valves on, sorry to seem a bit off but as far as i know 2-stokes dont have valves.

btw jack nice project, when are you going to check the exhaust valves?, is there any visable damage to them while in the head?
