Re: 1.2 rebuild dont laugh lol

hows it going?

what car is the engine in? assume corsa by the engine and the username but maybe a nova?

not so long ago i was rebuilding my 1200. what to replace depends on what condition it is in really, how in-depth you want to go, how much you want to spend and crucially how much space/shelter/tools/knowledge you have available to you.

answer those questions and i reckon there will be half a dozen folk giving you help and ideas.

well for a start its out of a 1.2 corsa montana , old carb engine 1996 ,

it wasnt in that bad a condition i will post some pics !

the head and everything is off just cleaning at the moment , i need to buy a spring comressor for the valves get them out and replaced ,

the only reason why im doing it is because it was starting to leak oil and the car its self didnt cost me much at all !

i have a good knowlage i think and a good work area to do it in down in a fully heated utility room (my mums not happy but o well !) lol !

the only reason im doing it it to get experiance im going to start with the head first , because its all off , then ill drop the bottom end out see what its like, piston barels look good and pistons dont look that bad, should i do the rings ?

well hear is the car how a bought it :
were i picked it up from :

the paint condition:
;
after a little buff of the rear of the car to see what i could get it looking like and i was impressed :

cheers

Re: 1.2 rebuild dont laugh lol

well as i said its about the engine mainly,

the car had been stood a while !! so was all cloged up and gaskets were buggered ,

so this is how the head and bits are at the moment after the first clean:

first the carb:

then the head bits:

Next week im getting them cleaned with some chemicals by a friend then power washed and dryed ,

This is all after taking the valves out and cleaning them and getting the guides cleaned ect, so its spot on ,

any comments on condition ect are very welcome ,

cheers

Re: 1.2 rebuild dont laugh lol

as said above great way to learn,
And it`s the single point injection not carb
Tbh i wouldnt bother pulling the bottom end apart, unless you know the rings are funcked.(mainly cos i`m lazy but if you wanna learn)
could clean out the sump and put a new oil pickup waterpump and sump gasket on.
new thermostat for the top end, coolant temp sensor will probably fail if you re-use it, but only cost a couple o quid,(this is located in the inlet)
erm, Dunno what else to say

the sump is the main gasket that has gone so that will be coming off , lol

if the boars look ok do you recon i should leave the bottom end and whats the best way to check the rings ?? the engine was a runner apart from the leaks lol (i was told! lol ),

i was thinking to do the following ?

water pump ?
timing kit belt ect ?
thermostat?
ill now do the coolent temp sensor lol were abouts on the inlet is this ?

anything else you would do let me know ?

full gasket kit inlet sump and head gaskets and head bolts.

and a full hose kit as the hoses look shot ,

does those valves look ok to any of you just need a clean up ?

The valves look okay from here, just very coked up and needing a clean, you should get a new set of valve stem seals with the head gasket kit,
The CTS is located on the top of the inlet manifold ,towards the left as you look from above, it screws into the manifold and would have a blue wire to it when fitted to the car, from experience when you undo these to bleed the cooling system they seem to fail afterwards so i change em now,
All the other items you mentioned are what you`ll be needing, don`t forget a new rocker cover gasket,

ok i hope that makes sense i`m tired,, i`ll double check it tomorrow lol

i`ll leave the piston boar question to someone else

Re: 1.2 rebuild dont laugh lol

i tthink the only way to check the piston and ring n rods properly is to remove them completely, and clean up, or replace any parts that need doing,
obviously you could check by running the engine, but its too late for that now lol.
what is the mileage of the car , cos if it is relatively low there shouldnt be anything wrong with the bottom end,, unless its been severely abused or neglected,

Re: 1.2 rebuild dont laugh lol

good job!
the throttle body can be dismantled more, the injector in the middle comes out with a twist,(Where the wire used to be plugged at the top),
probably worth sending off for a clean and new seals,as im sure it`ll have lost performance over the years,,
