dave's.cavy's old engine

For those of you who don't venture onto VxON, thought i'd copy across my WIP thread on this.

Purchased Dave's knackered C20NE for the pricely sum of £10 and a pair of headlights (blown headgasket and running probs)

He took it to bit's for me so as I could get it home.

I've taken some pics as I've started work, but didn't take any of the head before as I didn't know i was going to do this

Basically it looked like this (pic courtesy of LSI)

Stripped the head down keeping the hydraulic lifters in order along with the valves

I then used Alloy wheel cleaner and a small paint brush to clean the head up.....I wouldn't like to use that stuff much on wheels

The following pics are of it cleaned (might do a bit more yet) and polished,to a point.

I plan to have a go at porting it and will post updated pics

Generally the head is in very good condition with no signs of corrosion on the mating surface. Last operation will be to give it a light skim.

It measures 95.3m overall. Original height should be 96mm +/-.25mm so technically it's only .45mm down on original spec

Pics of the block etc to follow when i get my engine stand

I stripped the lifters down ....quick guide how to do it.........

[Look at the captive ring around the top part of the lifter and you will see two dimples.
Carefully with a small flat bladed screwdriver prise each side of the ring up off the lifter body at the dimples (hold a cloth over the whole thing incase the spring inside pops the lot up in the air!)

With the ring off, remove the plunger and small spring from the body.
Clean all parts in brake cleaner or similar ....soak overnight if needed
If any part is clogged with old oil careful scrape it out making sure you don't scratch the lining or body of the plunger

Pour just enough fresh oil into the body to cover the bottom part.
Locate the spring onto the bottom of the plunger and oil lightly

Insert the plunger into the body.
Offer the captive ring onto the body and with finger pressure press the ring back over the body until both sides click into place.

If you can't compress it enough, close it down gently in a vice until the ring clicks on.
You shouldn't be able to compress the plunger by hand if you have enough oil in there.

Either immerse in a pot of fresh oil for a while or if you have one ,use a small syringe to force some oil into the hole in the body (*note....don't go and pick up some old junkies used needle to do this* )
Doing this will prime the lifters and you should get a smooth start up and no or little initial rattle]

Re asssembled them all and put them in bags along with the followers all numbered.

Next was the valves.

Cut a block of wood and drilled some 7mm holes in it.
Put the valves in the wood and numbered them 1 to 4 inlet and Exhaust

Discovered one of the inlet valves hadn't been sealing properly and this co insided with the cam follower underneath being dull instead of shiny, suggesting the hydraulic lifter hadn't quite been doing it's job

Held the valves in turn in the lathe at work and used 80 grit emery cloth to get the crud off, then worked my way down to a bit of wet n dry

Next job is to lap all the valves in.

Next update to follow soon

Started to lap the valves in (borrowed a lapping tool from http://www.ratrace-motorsport.co.uk/ now in Potters Bar) a couple of units down from me as mine has gone awol

Have done all of them now and will stick a pic of them up over the weekend.

First pics of the block...............

Picking up an engine stand next week then can get cleaning

All this is being done where I work, tucked away in the corner.......boss grumbles a bit, good job he doesn't know the extent of my spare parts department stored there as well

More to follow......

Well progress has been slow due to actually having to do some work pppffffttttt

However first bits to arrive towards the re build ......new belt cover, stem seals and a cleaned up rear pipe (cheers dave's.cavy )

Waiting for belt tensioner, and the stoopid cover didn't come with any clips ..if any one has some going spare donations are gratefully accepted

Still polishing the head

Getting the engine stand Sat, then the block cleaning begins!

Boss starting to grumble more lately...............dunno why

Here we are again

I've done some more polishing to the chambers, but still more to do

Made a start on the porting of the inlet side.

Marked round the old gasket and started to rough away the metal with a Burr, keeping to just within the gasket (middle one in the pic)

When I've got the shape done i'll smooth the insides.

Another new bit...i'm feeling the tension now

Aaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnnnnd

Ta Da!!

A free engine stand

There does seem to be a bit of a lip on a couple of the bores, but i'll polish them out. I'll measure the bores tomorrow and see if there's any wear

Whilst I'm on the scrounge, if any one has a spare ribbed crankshaft pulley they'd like to throw my way (no, not at me!) or any other bits It'll be much appreciated
