projekt anti-dub

let me start by saying:

a heads up, all pics are taken with my n73 so pics arnt very clear

now onto business...i got monkey as a bday pressie when i turned 18 so it was really hard for me to sell it as it was pretty sentimental from my mum wasnt the mintest of golfs but i was mainly looking at insurance prices and this was fairly cheaper than even a corsa B 1.2 so i bought it with 18s (will get pics of them soon) and soonish got 15s fitted instead and refurbed them in satin black (see wheel refurb thread)...after i got the 15s i started getting trouble with the car during the MOT, the front shocks were dead, as were the topmounts, clutch slipped for a while then died as the spring inside snapped was funny actually as i was taking the car round the back to change it, so i had to push it to the garage for about 10 feet ...then i decided i want to sort the body work out so my mate started with the arches, but im gonna cut them off and weld on new arches just to get some fresh metal back on

smoothed the wiper off as it packed in, but i wanted to keep the badge as i dont like debadging that much

then got some sills

this is why i got some new sills

removed the arch and the door came off soon after

needs a clean

marking up where to make the cut...door is off as you can see and it has been blocked off with a wet bed sheet and a door skin to prevent sparks going in, and to protect the inside when welding

omg its gone

mate is hard at work

mmmmm chunky weldage (soon got ground smooth and primered)

thats half the body work completed, now i need to have the other side sill done and the care resprayed and caged up

the car soon got pulled of the road in december as i started to get engine trouble, so got the volvo as a run around and work horse

so today i moved the car onto my dads driveway (waiting to finish off garage build)...so now that its on private property i send of a v14 to claim back on 5 months tax (£80) (about a weeks worth of petrol for the volvo )

now today i got the engine running cleaned out the TB as it was pretty gunked up, and its running now but its still alittle rough, need to change the relay and hall sensor now for it to run mint

took off TB housing, TB is black

note the fule lines all i can say is i have cursed the previous owner alot

before the clean up, split the TB in 2...was pretty manky....forgot to take pics of the TB after i cleaned it

proof that it is running what was happening before is, when you lift your foot of the accelerator pedal it would just die and it failed to stay alive, but if i did manage to keep it running it would run very very rough...so all it cured bar the tiny tiny missfire

more next week

Thats some nice welding, You're doing a good job there.

I'd have gone lower on the rear bit tho, would have been easyer to hide, less filling.

cheers mate its my mate doing all the welding and body work...hes a legend and hes only 21 im learning how to weld aswell though, but not confident to weld such a big job on the car yet

when you say lower on the rear, do you mean suspension drop??? or do you mean the cut on the sill? if you mean suspension its going on coilovers soon if you mean the sill then we didnt want to cut up the replacement sill, so we though its best to make the cut on the bodywork...well when i say we i mean my mate, he knows his stuff and has been welding before he became a teenager

and many thanks to you aswell always giving tech advice over msn

oh right...my mate did consider that, but then he said it will be easier for him to get the line right, so i said meh lol...and as for the filler, the back arch isnt fully finished yet, need to sand it back properly, but i might get new metal on there soon...depends how i feel about filler lol...oh, and i just remembered, the reason why he didnt cut the sill down is because when we were cutting the sill off, we found that there was a pretty big dent that had been patched up with a kilo of filler so we bashed the dent out as much as we could and then half of it got cut out anyway

Re: projekt anti-dub

yay i has an update many thanks for Lee for changing the title of my thread, now i can do an update

anywho, ive been waiting for my dad to finish renovating the garage behind the house, nice big space, roof above my head but nooooo, hes taking his sweet time and i need the car on the road by the start of december to get the insurance/mot/tax sorted out and i need to get some welding done, so i got fed up and started stripping the car down in his driveway...wish i could have taken a picture of his face as he wasnt very pleased but i though, if awesome people like spanishfly could make his nova without a garage, why should i wait?!

so here goes...
headlights and grill gone

arches off, lookin manky but i dont want to add more paint as paint adds weight

the reason why i wanted this car to go into my garage so desperatly...i needed somewhere to store the car while its in bits so i can paint it...and now its gotten worse and i think the rot has come back

and bumper off, waiting to do my paint job on the arches and doors and rear quarters, should have one side done this week

then im gonna make loads of speed holes in the bumpers also made a start on the interior, by next weekend i should have all the interior off and most of the sound deadening crap off...then all thats left for me to order is a harness and a bolt in cage (both FIA approved), then a new engine then i will do all the brake pipes inside and get a fuel cell with a battery box

edit - the reason i have a drill there is because i had to drill oles around the bolts that hold the bumper on as the bolts were gone and spun round but im a tight git so im gonna just put a washer there instead and it should be all dandy

Re: projekt anti-dub

right, made huge progress today...got the whole interior stripped bar the front seats and the carpet under the seats, not bothered about removing the dash right now

anywho, started off with the door off and looking at one of the welds...need to grind it down but i dont have bloody access to electricity where the car is parked will see on the weekend what can be done about it

rubbed it all down like this

had problems with some filler, it wasnt done properly so it looks like its chipped off, soon corrected this but havnt got pictures

and got the back end stripped out

VW's attempt of sound deadening??? or side impact protection???

found rust on the inside where the weld is

started on the headlining, ripped it off by accident first when i tugged on it too hard

cut a section on the headlining out because it holds by buttons for the sunroof up untill i wire it a different way

and off!

need to dump the interior in the garage, will try this friday as i cant keep pulling everything onto the drive to do a little bit of work so im gonna concentrate on the body work for now

edit - also, this thread has had nearly 200 viewings since last night, but only benn replied

Re: projekt anti-dub

need to get some sealer on them welds if its gonna be in the elements a lot (grey stripe FTW), easier to just wire wheel sealer off than to get rid of the cancer that is rust.

as for grinding the welds back, try peening them in and filling over, should be fine, we used to do it a lot to minimise the loss in strenth grinding them down causes.

Re: projekt anti-dub

That's only surface rust. Nip it in the bud ASAP, sand it down to beautiful steel and get some primer and paint on it.
