afaik it would probably need to be DVLA inspected now, if you had the logbook for the M reg you might have been able to do it by post.

the van as it stands is still the M reg which hasn't had tax or MOT for years, you'll be liable for all that should you get found out, any copper who knows anything knows the van isn't a 1.7 diesel so when he has a deeper prod around and finds VIN discrepencies it's going on a one way trip to the crusher, you'll end up in court too.

by the sounds of it life has dealt you a bad hand, this van is just asking for more trouble.

I always had it insured as a 1.7d then a 1.7td then a c20xe then a x25xe, and even as a v6 its still in he same tax bracket as the diesel. So i wasn't doing it to cheat my way out of saying money or anything, i paid all the fee's. I did even send off to the dvla to change engine numbers capacity and code, but they sent back requesting a letter from Vauxhall confirming engine cc to number etc so gave up.

When i got the van it was in better condition than mine which i was just about to respray. So used that shell instead, with the new td engine i was going to use anyway. The blue one was one year newer than my early l-reg, which i wanted to keep as it ment i didn't need to have a power sapping cat. Thats the only reason i chose the old reg when i made all the parts from two vans into one. Ok may not of been 100% thing to do at the time but hey ho i wanted to keep my pre cat age. All the mechanicals were swapped over from mine as were most of the body panels and interior amd windows. The only thing m-reg was the bare shell and engine. At the time i never intended it to turn into anything apart from a run around that i was going to run into the ground and scrap so wouldn't have to worry about it.
all good and well but it was sold on, the problem is the chassis is the bit that needs to match the reg, this van would be a Q plate if done properly as like you say it was a mismatch of differing aged parts.

the van is still registered as a diesel too which is a puller in it's own right.

the m-reg van was put back together and scrapped, so i dont think you can put that back on the road. i think you'd have a hell of a job even getting a q plate i'd guess as if you went through it all, the shell is a '95, the doors wings etc are '93, the interior was '96 (dunno what the calibra stuff is) the front legs and brakes are '89, the engine is '98, the gearbox was '89 (dunno with the f16), the rear beam and brakes are '91, the wheels are 2003, the list goes on

if it was me, condem it as you may, make a rust repair on the inner sill, which happens to be where the chassis number is and write that off, the vin plate matches the logbook and windows and number plates, just update the engine to the logbook.

Remember this at the time. Sure you said you'd written to the DVLA and told them about the shell change?
