20XE Corsa Rebuild

So I have done loads of reading up on this and have been talking about it for ages but its finally started!!

Replacing this

This arrived on Tuesday, was pretty funny a huge artic lorry trying to get down my tiny dead end street (the kind where there is too many cars and the turn circle is always full of parked cars, not like it would have been big enough anyway ). Then when the guy came to the door and asked "Do you have a fork lift" Being in my house if found this pretty funny. Not sure a fork lift is an item many households have. TBH I thought the truck would have had something. So I called in a few mates and we lifted it off the truck round the back and over the wall since it wouldn't fit through the ****ing gates either

Done this so far, well i got the fuel rail off and the inlet manifold too and the rest of the coolant crap. It isn't half a tight fit back there! My hands are cut to bits.

Shot down one of the exhaust ports, The head is supposed to be rebuilt by Pro Drive. with new lifters, valves, bronze valve guides (SBD), ported and polished, Courtenay high lift cams

The bottom end rebult by EMS. Usual bits, big end, small end, water pump, oil pump etc.

Some other bits I have to go on

Got a manifold of egay that was supposed to be an Ashley number. Looks like a standard XE to me.

I cleaned up the clamps and took off the black cable tie (I had run out of clamps at that point)

Wish me luck and expect plenty of questions coming this way!!

Got a full gasket kit, oil filter, fpr blanking plate, 3m of s/s fuel line. Still to get oil pump water pump, timing belt kit, some rod and main bearings. Gonna get the cranks I have checked out to see which is the best first.

While the engines out I plan to spray the bay Satin black ready for when the engine is in and running. Then its gonna be removing the body kit and going to GSi skirts with an SRi or GSi front bumper. Need to take the bonnet off to it lets water land right on top of the dizzy cause of the "well placed holes". Need a new tailgate too and im gonna see about getting some fibre glass stuff. Depending on cost and how funds are, cause they aint great just now Will top it off with a set of 16" speedlines the 17's on it make it a really bumpy ride could with slightly thicker tyres I think.

Not sure if you'd have enough clearance around the bolt head to get one on? To be honest, drilling the buggers wouldn't be hard at all.

Anything can be done if you put your mind to it, and have a little help. I just pulled a Scooby engine out and did headgaskets, oil seals, etc etc, GOOD LUCK

just found your thread, showing some good potential, keep it up mate.

good luck mate, just plan well and decide what your eventual goal is for mods, it makes me chuckle when people goto phase 1 then 2 then 3 as it works out way more expensive in the end buying 3 sets of everything. jump to phase 3 straight away and save the cash for the insurance and fuel!!!

Interesting. I'll be watching this as you go. Sort of relieved about the whole kit thing, but I think you know the majority of mig feels that way.

Best of luck fella.

Like the vroom or boom bit! LOL

As for the rounded off bolts, as there is no romm to get at the bolt heads, buy a left hand drill bit & go at them with a drill in reverse.

Im not really sure what the LH drill bit will do? Will it pull the screw out or allow me get another screw into it to remove it? Am I trying to make it so I coud get a self tapper down it? Im a bit think with these things

An LH drill bit will hopefully grip inside the bolt head and undo the bolt (as it's spinning anticlockwise)

An RH drill bit (normal) could be used to drill the whole bolt head off so the rocker cover can just lift up and off the bolt (as it has no head anymore)

You could do that with a L/H drill bit too, but basically a drill thats cutting in reverse (to the bolt threads) should with a bit of sympathy maybe start to unwind said bolt meaning it wont need a full betchering & drilling right out.

Another option being 'easi-outs' or stud extractors.

'easi-outs' heard of these things before not sure how they work either. Never had a bolt stuck in something before.

easi-outs are like a big Left hand tap. Drill a hole in top of a stripped off stud or bolt, wind in the tap (anti-clockwise obv) & when it starts to jam & bind it will begin to unwind the offending stud.... anti-clockwise (hopefully) or else you are screwed.

Sounds 'easy' enough will nip in to Halfords and see what I can borrow. Used to work there so get free use of stuff every now and then.

I was lazy this weekend hardly did any work on the car at all. Went to the Scotland game on Saturday so after a 16 hour drinking session Sunday was a write off. I did manage to get the exhaust manifold off, drain the sump and I got the drill out but the noise was too much!

I found another hidden bolt in the cam cover which snapped in two pretty much straight away so im thinking the bolts will be made of jelly and I will drill it out if I make it home from work today lol.

not to worry mate, should be excellent when finished

oh and a little tip, if you lay off the pop not only can you do your build faster but you will also have more pennies to buy nice shiny bits for it

Yep, I believe it's the one that goes up to the header tank (when the engine is at home, cough cough lol)

Glad you got the bolts out!

For the next part is it best to put a jack under the block/gearbox and then loose off all the mounts and lift out as one bit (would think so). Can it be done in two parts i.e. block out first then gearbox? Don't really see how they could e split in the car though.
