| PROJECT: rear wheel drive vectra Now i've got my charger for the laptop i can finally start my project thread. After owning my last c20let vectra for nearly 4 years (starting as a 1.8) i fancied a change. I thought about selling all my stuff and starting again but i didn't want to go jap and i'm not rich enough for an escort cosworth just yet . The only other option was to rear wheel drive my vectra but the car had rear damage from when i bought it though and wasn't really an option. I had a X plate 2001 laying about so that's what i'm using. The shell is mint although the interior was filthy. I'm looking for 400hp in the end but will happily get it running on std power.
my old turbo

Some pic's of the car when stripping it down

The first thing i done was lose all the bracket's in the engine bay so i can smooth it all down. i then got a friend to weld all the holes up and grinded back down and filled
[IMG] [IMG]
[IMG] [IMG]
Started on the rear. First thing was to take the rear axle off
[IMG] [IMG]
Then the fuel tank
[IMG] [IMG]
I had to go over to near santapod to pick up a calibra rear axle off jamied on. Got to see his rear wheel drive astra mk2 and was a top man
[IMG] [IMG]
started to fit the rear axle
[IMG] [IMG]
[IMG] [IMG]
I took out the spare wheel well so the rear can be strengthened
[IMG] [IMG]
This is where i'm up to at the moment. I'm finding it harder to get parts then i thought it would. Once i've got the gearbox and rear diff i can start on mounting the engine. |

No really, why? The steering is separate from the engine/drivetrain is it not? |

| If he mounts the engine the right way round it will foul the steering rack.... id imagine even to do the transmission tunnel the rack will be in the way.

| Ah I see. I wonder if a Calibra Turbo would have been a better starting car (ie there is already a trans tunnel) |

They have a slightly bigger space for a prop, but nothing like what would be required for a RWD box.

| As said above the vectra steering goes across where the gearbox want's to go down. the omega steering sit's underneath the gearbox so will need to change over to that. |

| the exhaust tunnel serves as as prop tunnel on the cav/cally turbo does it not? Should be the same on the vectra.
Nice project mate..... Good luck with it. I recall the vectra steering rack is mounted on the bottom of the subframe, unlike the cavalier which is mount on the bulkhead. So the standard might sit below the engine/gearbox?

the biggest problem is getting the rear geometery correct because if it is not 100% in the correct place the car will never drive right
it might not even drive straight |

yes and no. it could of been alot harder. the fact that the vectra share's the same platform is helping. Quote:

i'll be using the exhaust tunnel as the prop tunnel (after the gearbox section is cut away) and worry aboiut the exhaust later on. the vectra steering rack sit's straight across the tunnel so not possible to go underneath. i looked at calibra stuff but it doesn't sit high enough. i want to mount the engine and box as far back as possible. only 2 mounting point's don't have a mount so getting it stright won't be an issue imo. the suspension lines up as well as the the support bar that bolts to the subframe. |
