The damage to my Coupe...

Jamied has kindly offered to rebuild the engine in the Coupe Turbo I recently bought. He took delivery of the car thursday evening and stripped the engine today...he took some pics...

The block...No1 cylinder is the one in question...

The piston head in question...

A close up of the damage...

Cylinder No4, note the metal on the piston head...

The culprit...remnants of the previous turbo...

Jamies manly left hand....

Let me know your thoughts

****ing hell, that's some crazy damage. Is the block scrap, or do you not know yet?

According to Jamie (and he has to check what the scoring on the cylinder linings is like first) it's salvageable, hopefully it won't be too bad and I'll get lucky.

Nice one. It's difficult to tell what the condition of the bores and the top faces of the pistons is like when they're covered in shrapnel.

Yer, Jamie is going to be removing the pistons anyway...for obvious reasons

I'm sure it'll benefit from a slight re-bore and over-sized piston rings. Nothing major, just enough to remove any scoring that may have occurred.

Yeah, a sly hone and some new rings and it'll be good as new.

I've heard some rumours that Jamie is the man to see for an engine rebuild.

Thats one serious mess

On a lighter note I love the way Jamie put tissue in the turbo inlet to stop anything falling down it!!

Well it was a toss up between him doing the re-build or Vauxhall wanting £4100 for a new engine. He won.

The vauxhall technician did that when he removed the head

We do that, only we use rubber gloves.

I used to use bundled up rag until I sucked one into the inlet on my land rover by accident. The engine had been sat for two years, so we thought it might just need a good thrash, so we put a bit of wood on the loud peddle and went inside for a drink.

When we came outside it was like smog in central london, you couldn't see your hand in front of your face.

The blue tissue was put there because vauxhall didn't remove the turbo. Jamied removed the turbo today...I assume he's not that worried about replacing it, seeing as the turbo is sat on his work bench

Blue tissue came in handy when i spilt my diet coke over my work scruffs...i normaly put condoms or ballons over the ends of the turbos...cheap and effective. the engine has tonnes of metal fragments in the inlet manifold from the last turbo explosion which were never cleaned out, thus finding there way into the head...nasty, the turbo spindle is also from the last turbo and was left in the exhuast housing...last fitter must have had a horse and yelled yyyyeeeeeeehhhhaarrrrr now and again or steve wonder has started engine rebuilds. I now have the turbo at the home workshop and sshall strip it down to look for damage..first check looks ok. The block comes out tomorrow morning and a full strip down and clean will be done, Then see how bad the bores look and see if its worth to machine them or re-sleve. The head needs new valves and guides and one of the crowns needs a bit of TLC.

Shall update andy tomorrow so he can post up here.

you will laugh but i did have glove on but had to take them off for the pictures i case we had to send them off to the seller...the gloves were purchased by my mate that works in a local children's hospital in a charity donation and have ever mickey mouse on them or moss chops printed on them..

The turbo is perfect from what i can see at the moment as the parts im holding are the remains from the last turbo which went bang and were left in the engine.
