    LIB 1512 rebuild

finally getting a wip thread for my rally car project.

bought the shell in august 05 for not alot of money, it has seen better days but its all still there and everything points in the right direction (almost) but hey im young and poor and we all have to start somewhere!

car was previously used for several years in the scottish forests so some people may well of seen it before, altho its been out of action for the past 2 seasons.

has been outside under a cover for 13 months so excuse the manky floor.

it has a very nice cage as you can see! thats the only redeeming factor of the shell really lmao

got a wee dent in here, sourced a suitable replacement tho

spend tonight and last night mocking up the dash im gonna run, chopped literally (i checked) half the weight out of the dash carcass and trimmed off bits that wont be used. mocked up my fuseboard panel which will sit in front of navigator. obviously this will be painted at some stage.

was able to strip the second skin off the back of the dash too as i wont be able to run a heater due to this bar...

i was sad and pedantic enough to chop up the side vents too as i still want the inside looking nice, but it doesnt need to function so i gave them the snip, heres a before and after shot.

tomoros job is to trim these away, along with the inner frames of the rear quarter and any other stupid brackets that have been added over the years (theres a few!!)

got lots of bits for it as ive had it for so long now, things like rose jointed tie bar mounts, strengthened bottom arms, bilstein cup struts (hopefully i will be able to get coilovers when the time comes) bilstein rose jointed thick group A rear dampers, fibreglass tailgate and a rose jointed gear linkage with internal shifter. wanted to run a straight in shifter similar to lee303s but it costs too much and i cant be bothered faffing around modding an astra shifter. also got myself an engine! it doesnt look like much now but boy oh boy it should be a goer!
    who knows what it is?

heres a clue for those who need it...

wee bit more of the same tonite.

got my dash cut and in

but the wee indent above the glovebox area fouled the rollcage so it had to be cut away (i always did wonder why the dash that came in the car was cut there )

also made a wee centre mount as the original brackets were chopped off, and i removed the captive bolts from the dash when i took the back skin off. nice and simple bracket

then chopped my door frames out but was quite dissapointed at just how little wieght it saved. also cut my firewall as i have plans for that area ive left the wiper motor mount for now but may cut it if i can find a suitable scuttle mounted motor to run 2 wipers.

still need to cut out the crappy battery tray and trim the firewall behind the turret but ran out of cutting disks...then cleaned all the paint off one chassis leg and gave it a coat of hammerite, will do the same for the other side on friday night hopefully.

you can see in this pic just how hard a life this shell has been getting...lets just say theres plenty more where that came from!!!

btw, just gonna paint all the bay, interior and underside hammerite white as i cant justify paying someone else to spray it and its pointless giving it all the prep cos its just not pretty enough basically. the shell is rough and its gonna have to stay that way. maybe sometime i will be able to reshell into a fresh shell using my cage.

good progress, dash looks well in there. Im sure u will tidy up the cut-outs nicely (get the flocking kit out)
Bit too late, but would have been cool just to cut enough out for the bar to run above the glovebox hole, rather than cut the whole ledge away (but u could put a thin skin of fibre glass over it and flock it?? giving std ish look and covering the hole)

Agree with the shell painting, its strong as hell with all the previous strengthening and repairs, get it looking acceptable, and give it some abuse on the rally stages!

For a first rally car (or any for that matter, i couldnt do it concourse, you would just cry everytime you drive it hard, hearing stones and **** rattling of the inner arches!!!)

If im free i may gadge a lift with ya to crail if thats ok

pulled the car outside yesterday and threw some panels and a trolley jack at it with gary. looked ****!

so some fettling today gives me an uber trimmed rear bumper, no kevlar on the doors and no stickers!

thats the bottom of the rear panel that you see just sticking out the bottom of the bumper. will possibly make a wee mount and bolt the bumper onto it so A you dont see it and B the bumper does wobble as much.

    no kevlar!

willl just plug the holes and cover with some sort of vinyl! either a random splash of colour or preferably a sponsors name lmao

thats all ive done this weekend as ive been partying too much.

where do i go looking for cheap 4 pot calipers for this? id prefer to have them but i could run 256mmATEs and good pads if i had to. i cant really afford to go splashing out on APs or willwoods so what cars am i likely to get a cheap set off of?

mgf? scoob and prsche and stuff will have hige disks, lots of others are cast iron and hence heavy
