Seems alot of people just stop putting their progress up due to the nobend comments they get, at the end of the day putting progress of big projects isnt really nessasery to the project, the only real purpose is to show people whats going on and the hard work there getting, along with providing information to people who plan to do the things them selves in a way its easier for the person doing all the project not to take pics all the time and just get on with it, so if pepole want to dig at there work its no skin off their nose, its just the small minded people who ruin it for everyone else whho cant see how progress is goin!

    Astra GSI MK3

Re: my new mk3 astra gsi...... turbo ;)

    Hi mate,

Early on in the thread you had a dump valve on the left hand side of the tophat, are there any benefits from doing this as opposed to the usual 'T piece' in the main inlet pipe (im inclined to do it this way as i think it looks far tidier)

where did the original pipe that was there (before the dump valve) go to, and after sticking a dump valve there what did you do the other end? (where the original pipe went to)

also after sticking the dump valve in where does the tiny pipe off the end of the dump valve go to?

reason im asking is im doing an XE to LET rebuild and ive never worked on a turbo engine before

    cheers steve

Keep at it chat, your threads are one of th few project threads thats worth reading and contains a lot more than just bolt on off the shelf bits. Its reading threads like yours that makes me want to go out and get another MK3 Astra. And after reading some of your up and downs it can put some of the smaller issues (like my current brake caliper issues) into perspective a bit and give some enthusiasm to move on.
Couldn't think of anything good to put in here.

If you dont' have a LET then comments like that don't seem to be an issue. It's cos everyone gets all agitated when people start waving their LET-bhp penises about lmao

its the regal enlarged top hat your talking about, the reason i canged to it is its 10mm (i think) larger than the origional. it just happened to have the dump valve outlet on it, didnt bother me either way as i dont run a dump valve lmao

the theory behind it is you want the dump valve as close to the throttle flap as possible, as its purpose is to release the boost when the throttle closes and has nowhere to go, so where it is on the corner of the top hat there is apolutly spot on for that purpose! (not that you'll notice one single piece of differance in the real world to have it there as apose to a t-piece in the top of the boost hose where they normally are!lmao)

the little hose is a vaccum and just attaches to any vacuum on the inlet manifold!

guys, if you get any comments left in your progress thread that you dont want there report the post. the comments will be removed and if they keep it up, their access maybe removed.

at the end of the day, no one wants people to stop updating their progress thread, no one wants to read bitchy comments and no one wants to see someones hard work being rubbished or slagged off.

Re: my new mk3 astra gsi...... turbo ;)

I just spent about the entire weekend reading this thread, and most of today.
I will search for the "the van" and the "the unit" threads tomorrow, if they are even half as good as this one they certainly will be a good read.

I am sorry to hear things didn't work out... (understatement?) I would have suggested welding the block with a high nickel % weld additive (dunno the word for it in english, the rods that come on wheels for MIG/MAG welders). If someone could tell me the composition of the cast, used for the block, I could certainly help you further.
Also, I work at a factory where they make (huge) diesel engines for large boats, they weld up cast imperfections regularly with an electrical welder, I could mail you a pack of rods they use for that purpose as well... These are to be welded with a very low heat input, very slowly, and hammered as feck to counter-attack the shrinking forces. Works well, can be drilled and tapped as well.

Also sorry to hear you don't have your helper anymore, the ugly basterd I am I would do much for such a nice thing

Dunno if you ever aim for Nurenberg or should you be passing through Belgium, you're more than welcome for a drink, a meal or some help with the spanners, you surely deserve that ! amazing things you do, I've never seen a thread where an engine got out of the car as much as this one...

You will be hearing from me again in your other threads... Don't know how far you progressed until now, I hope you have more luck this time...

Mods, sorry for the bump, but needed to reply after reading through this...
Note: the above may or may not be entirely correct.
I wondered why the frisbee was getting bigger, and then it struck me.

thank you very much for your time in reading through ive said it before and i'll say it again, its people like yourself who spend the time in reading through my threads that really make it all worth while and gives me alot of satisfaction. and by the sound of it you've had a very detailed read through not just skipping along the pictures, very greatfull for your time and comments as for the block, still not sure what i'll be doing, ive not started stripping the engine yet to see how far the crack really does go, but i do have another c20let block just sitting here, so might well just use that, otherwide i think i repair will always be playing on my mind lamo

yea i certainly did get a good techneique of getting the engine in and out without scratching they bay, had enough practice lmao

the other threads, the unit and van are just a bit of fun on the side, but still quite intresing all the same i think hope you'll have an enjoyable read through them too

not sure if you have seen it yet, but this thread has now been continued for its latest reincarnation, building it up from from scratch, its only just started but again i think it will make a intresting read for yourself

thanks again for all ya views and look forward to what you think of the other threads
