| Astra Redtop Track Car After reading the thread about no-spec I thought it would be a good idea to build an Astra track car in the spirit of good old no-spec.
I started off by buying a 1996 Astra Merit 3dr running with a 1.7L Vauxhall turbo diesel from my boss for £50. The turbo had blown on it and the engine had seen better days. It was about a 30 mile drive to get it home, but it only took 2 miles to competly kill the engine by sucking the turbo into it and having no oil, then launching it out of the exhaust towards Lance's (mind_crash) Astra. We started towing it and got half way home until we took a small break and a chance to get some photos.
The whole of the drivers side had a thick layer of oil all the way down it and the entire of the drivers side engine bay was dripping oil. After the stop we did manage to get it home and get a nice layer of oil all over Lance's car .
The next day we started to remove the entire interior, it took a couple of days but we finally got it all out.
Today we have got the engine and gearbox out. The engine is dead but the gearbox should still be fine.
We also went to a local scrap yard and got a new airbox and air flow metre from an Astra 2.0L Ecotec.
Tomorrow I pick up the C20XE ready to be fitted over the weekend. |

| We picked up the C20XE engine yesterday from seanr28. We are going to change some bits on it, like the cam belt and HT leads before it goes into the engine. We will hopefully get it mounted in the week. |

| I picked up the engine on Saturday from seanr28 (it was a quick and easy sale) and got it home Saturday afternoon only to find that our engine/gearbox mount brackets won't work with the C20XE. I am now trying to get the mounts we need so the engine can be put in this coming weekend. |

| Looks like a great little project, too bad that the engine blew on the way home, at least it got home though. For £50 you can't complain. I would love a little project
Keep us updated.

| The exhaust manifold and engine mounts will be here this week so we should get the engine mounted this weekend. Even if it does snow. |

| When the engine gets mounted the rear of the car is going to be really high. What are the best springs to get this lowered and work well on the track and keep to a very limited budget? |

| I know it's very sad to see all our hard work go but my dad needs to be able to drive his MX-5 out of the drive the Astra is blocking. |
