    like its a hire car

    Re: Lee's Garage

Its IRS, so a complete set of control arms, hub, shock, spring, brake, wheel and quarter panel would be the least I would want to change before trusting it 100% again
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, thoroughly used, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming... "f*ck, what a trip!"

such a ball ache though, hire car company rang the wrong phone all day so no hire car till tomorrow, ditto the bodyshop, deep joy...

    Re: Lee's Garage

righty, went up this evening and did absolutely nothing lmao!! did route through some gearboxes for willay and measure a alternator mount for spanish, but other than that it was an evening of pure mincing, old school stylee

Brian has had a go at his first manifolds first primary though, looks bloody great!!

the tube peened out to eh inside of the flange nicely whe it was still warm from welding

he did get it somewhat hot though as he was having so much fun with the tig torch, but the bench will be fine once we make a new top lmao
so, one down 5 to go but he doesn't want to do them all till he gets the secondary tubing as he wont be able to get to all the tubes for welding if he does, so this weekend should see some significant progress

    Re: Lee's Garage

The guys at work are really helpful and certainly know there stuff just a shame it's for motorbikes and not vauxhalls! Was a bit nervous knowing how expensive they are but well worth knowing it's right from the start. Any idea where I can get mains bolts from? Seem to be able to find con rod bolts but not mains... Sorry for the thread hi-jack.

    Re: Lee's Garage

I know it's a bit late, but I did my uni placement at BTB so I can give you a few insider tips on making that manifold.

Tip 1 - If you can, stick the tube through the flange (oo-err) so that you have a few mm poking out the other side, and leave this on while you weld it.

Tip 2 - You should tack the primary in place first and then use a blowtorch (or oxy-acetylene) to heat the inside of the primary up so you can bash it out to shape. Use a tool made from some bar stock (about 20mm dia), about 8 inches long so you can hold one end, and a hammer. The idea is you stick the shaping "tool" down the primary and then wallop it with a hammer to shape the primary to the flange - i.e. the tool is held perpendicular to the flange and you hit it sideways. It works perfectly.

Oh and round the end of the tool off so you don't get marks on the inside of the primary!

Tip 3 - Weld the primary to the flange after you've done this, then carefully grind off the excess primary tube. You can tap the primary out a bit if there are any gaps between it and the flange, but it should be pretty good.

Also, your flange isn't going to be very flat after you've welded it, so you should look into getting it linished flat afterwards.

    Re: Lee's Garage

righty, a fun filled tuesday, mainly because i have nothing to do so just spend my time eating chicken nuggets and taking the piss out of the manta builders…
although matts is taking some shape now!!

admittedly, its mostly just a shape, but i like it! lmao
brian meanwhile removed the v6 currently in the bay to sort the clutch release bearing while he waits for more exhaust tubing to turn up

he can finish his dry sump off too, apparently, its working quite well at scavenging already!! lmao

oh, and we arsed about a bit too…

    more on that later...

looking good all round! Whats left to do on the nova now? Did the chair feel much safer now youre protected during chicken soup manoeuvres?

its made of expanding foam, filler and fiberglass right now, but thats just the 'mould' as he will be making the entire thing out of fiberglass, DTM clip styleee
