I've already wasted an almost mint Mk2 SRi 5 door by landing it on it's roof. It wasn't as bad as that, but I'd lost faith in the car as I bought it cheap as it spun out on the previous owner, too.![]()

Think they're Jamex! 40mm drop on mine worked out to 60 on the rear and 70-80 on the front!! Has the coating come off yours yet? lmaoOriginally Posted by Astra Dan
No by unkown I mean I was sent them when I ordered -40mm springs for the mk3. It slammed it about 80mm! It drove awfully as well, with massive camber on the front. So I obviously called to complain and they sent me some -40 Pi springs which worked a treat. I stuck the unkown springs on the mk2 and it's lowered it about 50mm I think.

Well great. As I sort of suspected, a 'trained' Vauxhall fitter is just as useless as I thought.
Picked the car up tonight. First annoyance was I was told the cam belt etc comes with no warranty at all. I was a bit miffed as you can imagine. If they were the last to take the engine to bits how can they not be responsible? Anyway, I really couldn't be bothered to argue, I just wanted to get the car and go home.
Once I got home, the temperture warning light came on as I reversed into the garage. Great. No idea why this is happening. Also, I could hear the engine once in the garage. LOUD whining noise coming from the engine bay area, accompanied by an awful sort of crunching noise. So the cam belt is STILL too tight. Also I noticed the air pipe where it secures to the filter box has split, and the clip holding the other end onto the airflow meter hasn't even been tightened. Absolutely super.
So I'll be on the phone tomorrow. I'm not happy to drive the car anywhere, or run the engine at all. I EXPECT them to come and trailer the car away to investigate at their cost, but I doubt this will happen.
Really, I just want a refund and I'll get a belt kit from another dealer, I'm sick to death of this already. I'm also worried there's a duff batch of rollers or something.
For reference at the photoshoot on Sunday I'd refitted the old belt and rollers and the engine sounded lovely, so there's nothing else at fault.![]()

Right. Took the Cam belt cover off. My intention was to have a look, but not fiddle, initially.
First thing I noticed was the actual belt tension was pretty loose. Which pointed to the rollers. Again. I found even with the slack moved off the rollers I couldn't turn them.
I couldn't face not having the GTE for the bank holiday weekend (plus, the bugger's got 1/2 tank of fuel!). I also know Vauxhall are going to drag their heels big time, if they play ball at all. So I delved in. Left 'new' belt on and removed the two rollers. I found they were VERY stiff, which confirms why the belt was humming, despite hardly any tension between the pulleys.
Now, Vauxhall didn't have kits in stock when I ordered the first kit, so I'm thinking it may be a dodgy batch or similar.
Now I can return to Vauxhall in Pompey and hopefully talk to the head mechanic guy who accused me of overtightening the belt the first time and show him similar state rollers which were installed by one of their own fitters.
I just want a refund now and I'll maybe leave it 6 months or try another dealer or perhaps Autovaux. Or, shock horror, just try a motor factor's kit.
I'd be grateful for any opinions on this.

that last pic looks like grease?
and it much be a dodgy batch,
remember both my kits? fully easy to spin rollers...
sure they'd have spun then? i allways do....

go back after doing your research and show them you are right all along.
Then do what i do, buy the bits from autovaux, have them sent to my house if you wish or i will order them for you to ensure delivery (this time) and get on and do the jon as it should have been the first time

I'm quite excited as I've solved one of the most annoying 'faults' with the GTE; different bloody keys! It has a different fuel cap so has two keys. Really annoys me. eBay came to the rescue, complete new, INCLUDING the glove box, lock set for £19 delivered! Yes!

BIG thanks to Jamie_F.
Back box and centre section were rather rusty, and as some of you may know, a standard replacement is tricky to come by. I have a really good one in the garage which we'd tried to modify to fit the Mk2 (1.3) but messed it up a bit, so I'd bought another for that. So I had a good condition but mutilated one sat around. Jamie offered to have a go at welding a new bit on, so off to his work we went!
Pics by Benn.
Knackered! This is only about 4-5 years old:
Took old centre section off. I'd previously freed all the bolts off, so this was no trouble, but I had to cut it near the join to the back box.
Cat looks in very good shape:
New centre section (£28 from Vauxhall TC), with some high temperature paint to hopefully preserve it a bit:
Obviously to know in which position to weld the intake pipe to the newer back box we had to hold it in position. Luckily, Jamie has all the right stuff:
Lots of welding later, finished article:
Thanks Jamie!
