Tonight I started on what some might call the initiation of 20XE ownership: changing the sump gasket.
Although I doubt it's never been touched, it isn't really that bad:

Bit grotty, but not pouring out yet.

Manifold off, this was pretty easy really:

Whilst under the car, it'd be rude not to have a look about, post-Combe, too:

    Looks ok there.

Good here, too. I really started to fell sorry for the car towards the end of the session at Combe, I think I got 7 laps in. She lapped it up however, spinning a little into 3rd gear occasionally, so I say it must be putting out good power still.

Sump off, the oil was still golden as I'd changed literally the day before Combe:

    Nothing scary here:

Pick up pipe lovely and clear of debris (till I rubbed against it):

    Cool too-far-away-using-macro shot:

    Underside of piston shot:

Plenty of sealant had been used previously, to no avail. All of the gasket seemed wet to me.

So tomorrow I'll get a new pick up pipe sealing ring and some RTV sealant. I'm using the Ecotec combined baffle/ gasket with shortened bolts sold by LMf as a kit for £27 at PV.

    Check back for progress!

Well my experience tells me to follow Vauxhall's advice, and apply a small amount of sealant to the gaps on the oil pump and main cap at each end.
I tried covering the whole gasket in a small amount of sealant on the Mk3 (8V, rubber gasket) and it leaked like a bugger. Second time I used the above method it's tasty as over a year on...

Nicely. I did all that on my last XE & it turned out to be the crank shaft end seal leaking.

    Good, fun exercise though.

Sump gaskets are fooking annoying, usually they still leak even after being replaced, lol.

Pick up pipe sealing ring not in stock at Vaux, local factors don't sell it. Should be in in the next couple of days. £1.14 I think it was.

So here's the new baffle/ gasket:

The all-important £1.40, non-stock sealing ring. I can't help picturing a 7.5 tonne lorrry pulling up to the Vauxhall dealership with the driver leaning out the window and handing the stores guy a bit of paper with the ring taped to it:

This stuff is the nuts. I replaced the sump on Byron's lady's Fiat Punto; this is what they use instead of a gasket. This stuff is like glue, it sets so good I actually had to hammer a hole in the old sump to get the bugger off. Just a dab over the gaps between the oil pump and block, and the main cap on the gearbox end.

Comparing old and new baffles. Sometimes something needs bending to clear the crank, I quickly held it to the block and Benn spun the engine round, no problems there:

    Sump all clean:

Ahhhhh. All clean. But spot the next bloody job I need to do. I deliberately put a new boot on there to avoid this. Good job thsese photos were taken, I didn't see it when I was under there.

    You silly, silly TWAT.

Yup, smashed into the back of another car at a junction. I was in a ****ty mood this morning and probably not concentrating. The only good thing, if it can be called a good thing, is that the car I samahed into was.... my other Mk2! lmao I usually follow Sharon through town then we go out seperate ways to work. She pulled into a road and stopped becuase a dustbin lorry had stopped on the corner. I was still checking the road to the right was clear, pulled out, looked left, stamped on brakes, ABS cut in so I barely lost any speed when I hit the Mk2. The indicator has taken the full force of the shunt and I knew the headlight washer was gone before the two cars even touched. I got into a bit of a rage, I can tell you.

So, back home this evening I waste precious hours putting the poxy 205 back together to move it out of the garage to get the poorly GTE in.
    Assessment of damage:

It looks in very good order behind the front bumper. One of the Mk2 Astra's definite strong points is the ease of the design to work on. The front bumper especially should be an example to many a car desginer. Two 13mm bolts and 3 screws is all you need.

    Borken bits.

The headlights are brand new, lucky it looks like it's just been pushed back a little, with a little crack in the case which I filled with hot melt glue:

Even the flimsy white clips survived, only one had a side missing. I had one in stock, I think I'll order some more for good measure:

Time to raid the stores. I got a handful of washer jets from a guy a while back. Wouldn't you know it, one spare good o/s, no complete n/s ones. Luckily you can take them to bits and remove the actual nozzles!

Found a good indicator. Remember pukka GM ones are grey, not poverty spec white. I have a brand new one for that side, but not a o/s one as yet.

    Testing the lights:

All done! You'd never know it. The headlight protector has some scratches, but is more than usuable. I have some brand new ones I can use for shows if I feel like it...

Stupid man. I hope I don't do that again!

Ah bugger, but lucky you have all the bits needed in stock.
Glad either car is badly damaged, and i'd have had the ultra rage!

Shows even the best drivers can lose it for a second slip up.

Re: My GTE 16V Restoration Thread.

Small update. The rocker cover has been looking quite sad for a while now. pitstoppete donated a ready-shot balsted one and JaguarJohn had it powder coated for me (mucho thanks!).
    Minging!

    Off (again):

Cams look in good order, cam belt looks ok. Lovely.

Old and new. New one has been pressure washed, degreased then pressure washed again to hopefully clean any debris out.

Baffle plate re-fitted with way too much sealent:

But not as much as Vauxhall use!

    Gasket transferred (again!):

    All done:

Looks much better again. This should, of course, last pretty much forever. Cam belt cover next would be nice.

Need to redo the plug cover next.
