Today we trial fitted the C20LET. It will be removed again for the shell to be strengthened and painted.

I'll let the pictures below do the talking (with some comments) Huge thanks to cormac for giving me his saturday, and a lend of his engine lift, cant thank you enough!

    1.2 Engine stripped back.

    C.V Nuts removed.

    Sexy Cormac!

Me Pulling a stupid face

Engine Secured to be lowered down.

    Engine Dropped to the floor!

Nice Empty bay - Its turbo time!

Cormac Drilling out the spot welds for the old 5 speed mount.

Engine with 6 speed, ready to be fitted.

    Lifting the shell up!

    Engine pushed under.

    Me all excited :P

    Up we go!!

Woohoo!!! Its in and almost mounted up.

Turbo cover and air filter in trial position. Looks awesome. But will be a million times cleaner for the final fit.

Chris Astley mount for the 6 speed box, replaces the old mount that we drilled off.

Look how close the F28 sits to the inner wing!

    Tight to the steering rack!

This needs to go, so i can get better access.

    Remove Spot welds

    And its gone!

And its now tucked away for the night!

Thanks once again to cormac, and to Terri-Ann, it couldnt have been done without you.

    NEXT ON THE ADJENDA:

Remove the engine again and send to S-Gault for a freshin up.
Send shell to get seam welded, the 6 speed mount and harry hockley strengthning kit to be welded in.

    Thanks for looking!

    Keith

Looking good Keith. Have you tacked the mount onto the chassis leg for the F28?

Not yet Rick, My neighbours an engineer, so i hope he can bring home a small mig so i can get it tacked on. Then i'll have it properly welded along with the bay.

To line up the f28 mount just you just bolt up the other 2 mounts and see where it sat, use a spirit level or what?

I think thats pretty much it, the other mounts hold the engine supprisingly straight, and i can only push the mound front and back about 2mm each way. Its the height that is paramount.

Any other F28 runners agree before i tack it on?

Here is how mine was done:

First. Undo the 2 furthest forward top mount bolts and run a string between the 2. Make sure the rocker cover and head sit square to this piece of string.

Second. Square the engine with a sprit level or to the slam panel if you know that is level.

Bish bash bosh weld it in.

The string idea is a good idea!

Not sure on the spirit level thing tho as I'm running coilovers and there's a very good chance I havn't got them even! lmao I suppose there's no reason why I shouldn't adjust them with a level first then put the engine in??

I made sure my car was on a level piece of ground and level on axle stands then checked the engine was straight with a sprit level.

Been trial fitting the loom tonight, just to see wheres best to route it so its not showing all over the place. Some of it seems a little damaged so i might source another. Can you still get LET looms new from vaux?

Offered up the inlet, the fuel rail, loom and turbo. Think i'm definatly going to have a removeable slamm panel for better access, as its pretty tight!

Its my wiring, vacuum hoses and water pipes I'm talking over the next few weeks Keith. Its much harder to keep an LET Nova bay tidier than an XE one!

I would definately recommend the removable slam panel. I know some people havn't done it but it makes life so much easier! You just have to make sure it maintains its strength as you're lights will flex and the bonnet will wobble when on the move! This is the reason I'm having to redo mine.

I've just discovered something. My crappy early early spec front panel doesnt have the correct slots for a MK2 grill Looks like i'll need a new top half panel fitted during the welding.

Keith just have the holes cut in the panel, with a drill and a file it would be easily done. Far better than fitting a new slam panel.

The Inlet and turbo were discustingly dirty lol. So since the weather was slightly better today, i went and steam cleaned them both. The inlet could still do with some autosol to remove some of the dirt, but until the engines rebuild it makes it cleaner to work at.

Turbo came up excellent, and will only now need a quick rub over to make it 100%.

Should be taking the engine out next weekend. And the strengthning to the shell is scheduled for Jan.
