    Trampdrift Carlton

Probably not really MIGs thing, but hey.... thought Id pimp this one here......

Why a carlton you ask? Well I dont have loadsa cash, want to get into drifting and Im no big fan of S13's truth be told.... and Im a vaux boy at heart.... so I thought why not? Couldnt afford the juice on a 3.0 24v GSi though so thought Id go with a 2.0. Good GSis are hard to find anyway. 2.0s weigh about the same as a standard S13 too.

    My steed as purchased....

A reasonably sound (so I thought!) Carlton with some untidyness to the panels. Perfect for me to go hooning around in and not cry too much if I damage it.
First niggles came through were a holy exhaust system, and a leaking heater Matrix.

    Got some alloys for it....

    (need spacers though)

    Pics of new parts fitted.....

Pics of SH bits fitted on suspension.....

(yes I know I need to tidy the garage! )

    Casualty of war....

Thats what happens when you use an 3/8th Drive cheap rachet with a 6ft breaker bar! Its survived 5 or 6 years of semi regular breaker-bar action though, so it still gets respect from me

Carlton with front suspension bits fitted (back looks lower than normal due to lots and lots of tools in the boot.)

    MMMMMMMMMMMM Carbon Kevlar for £25.....

Amazingly the width of the rails was perfect for the carlton mounting points! The rear holes needed ovaling slightly, but otherwise..... booom straight in! haha! And what a difference to the drive! Makes the car feel soooooo different. its untrue. Healthy 15kg saving over the standard item also

Spacers ordered for alloys, although now Im tempted by a set of 8x18's for £200! Do I? Dont I? Was contemplating spending £100 on refurbing the 16s. But they are weaksauce 6.5 width. Gah gah gah!

Started stripping the beast late last night...
Ok no pics Im afraid as Ive been stripping like a... err..... stripper? lmao

    Anyhow!

    Weight removed so far....

    Spare wheel:- 17kg
    Tar from boot:- 5kg
    Front seat:- 23kg
Rear Seat (not inc bench):- 12kg
    Rear bench:- ???
    Rear trim:- ???
Seatbelt mechs rear and 1 front:- ???
Tar and heavy sounddeadening material from cabin:- ??? (gonna be a fair few kgs in that one I reckon)

    Weight added.....

    Bucket seat:- 5kg
    Harnesses and mounts:- 3kg

So in total Ive definitely lost around 49kgs, and thats only what I have weighed! the arse is firmly in the air, it pulls better, stops better..... and generally Im loving it

MORE strippage tomorrow.... and hopefully more weighage too! Just need some petrol to start getting all that smeggy leftover tar off

Future plans..... more strippage, welded diff, fit rear springs and double ARB..... then its time to go have lotsa fun oooooooooooh yeaaaaaaaah.

Just been out for another drive since todays work (pics to follow WHEN I can log into photobucket.com) Its either rather slippy out there or Im going to have to learn about sideways very very quickly Wheelspin into 3rd! Wheels lock on downshifts! Sideways everywhere! I FRIKKIN LOVE IT

Oooh, had a lovely little "I didnt know they rust THERE" moment today as well. Was pulling the carpet up in the front passenger footwell, and one of the little lugs thats supposed to hold it in flicked out.... "hmm makes my life easier" thinks I! Then I spot the rust on the end of it..... "Hmmm, thats not so good"..... poke finger where is came from..... finger goes straight through into front wheelarch.... "Hmmmmm..... BUGGER" Its only a small hole to be fair, about 2 inch square, will have to get it welded ASAP. Good job I found it now though! Was wondering why my car was always so wet inside!

Anyhow, removed headlining today, did the final 'adjust' on the bucket position, its perfect now. Removed some more tar pads. Didnt get HUUUGE amounts done due to waking up about 1pm oh well. Oh yeah, played with the adjustment on the front shockers.... think they were on maximum soft so were a tad wallowy.... now on max hard seems to have eliminated wobblyness. Anyone know which way is harder on a Koni adjustable strut? Clockwise / anti?

Sitting even higher at the back now!

Oh yeah, my dad knocked my digicam off the table but in a strange moment of luck it fell onto the bag of tar pads next to the table which cushioned its fall perfectly

Oh yeah forgot to say.... can even still hear the radio @ 90mph quite happily, so thats good (hey this is my daily driver dont forget! Need choons every now and again!)

slow day today. Did some maths and the carlton has approx 41 degrees of steering angle as standard. Thats about the same as the S13 no? Fitted a fire extinguisher and swore at the suspension for the rest of the day oh well.

Right thats the end of my copy paste from another diary.

    Current picture....

Im getting a van to drive for a couple of months now, so the welded diff is being done ASAP.

Then got to tidy up the insides for Billing, re-route the wiring... sort the switches into useable positions. Fit the GSi brakes, refurb some wheels, the list is endless!

I'll vouce for L / GL Carltons being driftable.

My old 1.8 would drift controllably (given a lot of revs) on a stock diff, suspension and tyres

    AAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHHAHAH

After what seems like eleventy million years, Ive finally

    a- got a diff welded
b- got it welded so the driveshafts go back in

    and most importantly....

c- fitted the mutherlurver! Very Happy!

Its fooking ace. Forgotten how completely nuts cars with welded diffs are to drive! Im like this.... everywhere now.

I just hope I dont break anything! Its been ok so far! (touch wood)

Goes sideways nicely too, did a lil clutch kick in the dry and it gave me portions of sideways compared to the old "spin one wheel up" scenario. It even handles nicely! Chuck it into a bend with some gusto and you get a nice neutral drift going on, after the initial resistance to turn. Love it.

    Thanks man....

Yeah, it doesnt make a huge difference to the noise levels Ive found and weighs in at around 20-25kgs all in IIRC Ive just got to get some bullsh*t paint in there to make it look semi-presentable. Oh yeah and get the last bits off. Im hoping I get some decent pics taken of me next weekend!

Welded diffs are ok as long as you dont go round sweeping bends on the way to work, in the wet. sideways tastic.

have you tried reversing out of an asda carpark space yet. loads of fun as the rear of the car lifts up and you stall it lmao

Cant wait to see some pics of this in action

Does it have to be an Asda space? lmao But yes, tried a 3 point turn, was funny as fook. The car hated it.

And yes Im dreading trips to work in the wet, but hopefully by then Ill of resurrected my Ho'mega
