Something has gone wrong with the lock on my girlfriends Astra. She puts the key in and it just keeps turning without locking or unlocking the car. It's a 1996 model with central locking, if that makes any difference.
Is it likely that something has just come loose or am I going to have to buy a new lock? If its got to be a new lock, will I be able to replace the tumblers so that she doesn't have to have a new key?
You can order new barrels to fit the current key, yes. A lock set is only about £50, so consider this when paying about £25 for the single barrel.
I have been womdering if it's possible to use the passenger lock barrel in the drivers door (as it's less worn onmine) and then put a rear handle (with no lock) in the passenger door.
Well, I've found the problem. There is a metal ring thing on the end of the lock cylinder which has snapped. I've been to Vauxhall and got the parts to fix it but can't for the life of me work out how to put it together. There is a tiny metal cylinder shapped thing that fits somewhere. I'm going to search through the EPC in a minute to see if I can find a diagram that may help.
Whilst I was doing the lock I noticed the window does not sit right. It needs to slide towards the back of the car. Is there anyway to adjust it?
Paul - Thanks mate. Although it isn't the cause of my problem, it is most likely the cause of my neighbours. He saw me messing with the lock today and told me about a problem with his deadlocks.
There are 2 bolt feads that are near the lock mech of the door that are spaced about 6 inches apart that fit through crescent shaped holes. These adjust the angle the window opens and closes at. It's probably worth trying to adjust them first.
Other than that you might have a loose or bent guide runner.
