Question battery light on very dim..... whats gone wrong?

tonight i was in my car for about an hour or so playing the x-box so i turned off the screen and went out on a job. 2hrs later, car wont start so i gave it a jump start. on the way home i noticed the battery light was on but everso dim does this mean the battery is fooked? the altenator is fooked, or both?

gave it a rev, still stayed very dim. i realy dont need this right now, in fact i dont need this at anytime let alone now

i have also noticed that when i play my music sort of 3/4 volume the lights are diming didnt notice that b4

do i seek the help of an auto electrician first?

cars.... dont u just love em!

    gav.

Sounds like alternator but try a different batt if you can first.

Wouldn't failing alternator make the battery light come on bright rather than dim?

Any garage should be able to check the condition of your battery and alternator..
My battery light glows with just the headlights on, local garage checked battery and alternator output and they both seem fine.

Probably going for a new battery some time soon(ish). Going to get the biggest one that'll fit in the battery tray.

i have also noticed that there is loads of battery acid at the bottom of the battery holder looks like i'll have to give that some attention soon

for some reason when the car is left for a few days (i use the corsa every now and again) it seems a little reluctant to start. d'ya recon its the battery then?

also if the battery is low on power will the battery light come on or am i facing another problem?

When the battery light comes on when driving it means that the alternator cant supply the current needed so uses power from the battery. Dimly lit means a little is borrowed from the batt brightly means alot.

Also a failed alternator can give very strange readings regarding the battery light.

An un-fused short circuit could also cause your prob but the smell of burning would be a give away.

Well either way with the altenator messing up, the light will come on.

    Those 2 cases would be

    1) Not charging

    2) Over charging (regulator rectifier)

    Get a battery check.

Strange... there is absolutely nothing wrong with my alternator and yet I still get the glow from the battery light..
**Touches wood just in case of speaking too soon about the alternator being ok**

sounds like it could be the problem that i had the other day
try connecting a jump lead from the battery - (negative) terminal to the engine somewhere to make a stronger negative connection
if the lioght goes out start replacing or cleaning the earths up.
mine was the one that comes off the gearbox.
    hope this helps a little

    Unhappy oh dear.....

yup its the altenator its going in 2mora to be uprated to 120amp cost as yet unknown but its gona need to be sorted out one way or the other.

only giving 40odd amps under load and charging at 12.9v somit is not doing its thing

wont see much change if any from 300

Trade club doesn't list alternators for the Omega/Elite ->99.
But it does have some under Omega/Elite but doesn't specify a year. 120amp alternators on that list are 170+vat trade club.

Main dealer hourly rate.. something like 70??

    240+vat.... 282....

This years does and it is 2.2 DTi, Part No R1530020 Alternator 120 Amp and is 84.40 + VAT

As those who know, know, the R on the part number means it is an exchange unit.

by the way it was probably the jump start that killed it, jump satrting cars can be bad for the alternator, believe its something to do with the zenner diode, best to bump it if you can, or even better take the battery off and charge it, i know its not always possible but alternators are pricy!

    But the 2.5/3.0 ones (part number R1030078) are 170+vat. Gav doesn't have a 2.2DTi.

Info from the Trade Club online (so it should be up to date)
