Re: Astra MK4 Temp Gauge / Engine Swap etc

Here's my fix for the Astra mk4 temp gauge/engine conversion problem.

Cheap £15 LCD temp gauge and a couple hr's modding the standard dials end up with this

Personally I wouldn't bother emulating the signal for the mk4 astra dials.

Normaly the ecu feeds the fan control module with the temp signal, the fan control module then feeds the temp gauge, this makes the rad fans work I dependant of the temp gauge.

Now if you make some board to use With some form of temp sensor to feed the Astra temp gauge you still end up with te big problem of no fans. Seeing as the mk4 Astros don't he a fan switch in the rad it makes things very awkward.

What needs to be done is you need something to emulate the correct temp aigbal that the ecu would give out, which would go to the fan control module, the module will then work as it should so the fans would work as they should and then the fan/cooling control module sends its own signal to the Astra temp gauge.

Hope this makes sense as it would be a millions times better to do it that way, also saving people much time and money tryin to sort something out to then get their fans working properly...

Makes perfect sense and the idea is to have a couple of switched ouputs from my module which will give a two stage fan control if needed without messing about with the engine ECU / cooling module. I've got a feeling (need to investigate though) that the signal that feeds the dash will be the same signal the ECU feeds the cooling module but will have to have a play with the scope when I get some more time.

    Possibly relevant thoughts:

When I wired up a CLET in a Mk4, we left the old ECU in to drive the dash gauge and it worked fine and also turned the fans on when the engine got hot enough, but then the fan light came on and the fans stayed on till ignition cycle.
Not all Mk4s have the coolant module either.
    They're there, in their room.

    Hi Gary

Still doing the pulse converters and it should sort out your rev counter problem. They are £35 delivered but I'm in the process of rebuilding the workshop so can't make anything for a few weeks at least. I'm taking advance orders on them and they will be sent out in order of purchase. If you want to bag one you can order it off the webshop and either pay upfront or click on the "check/postal order" option so your order will be on the system but no money will be taken. I'm more than doubling in size the space I have to work in so with a bit of luck can make more stock upfront in the future

Hi Gary - had to stop making all bits and bobs for cars as I couldn't renew my public liability to cover my to make and sell them.

I may start selling parts to let people build their own at sometime in the near future but I won't be able to sell ready made modules. If you're still interested, create an account on my webshop and when I get back up and running I'll do a mailshot to all customers.
