    Calibra Ignition Relay?

My mum's cally have developed a strange fault, the ignition won't switch off... it can even switch itself on (with the car all locked up).

Tracked it down to a relay hidden behind the fuse panel, I can't get the bugger out but if you tap it you can switch the ignition on/off!!!!

Is this just a main relay for the ignition that's worn out? Wondering if I should buy a new one or get another second hand one

    Re: Calibra Ignition Relay?

I would think it is more like your ignition switch that is bringing that relay on, according to haynes manual, there are no relays to bring the ignition on, but rather the switch bringing relays on. Calibra ignition switches are o0f a very poor quality and design.

Won't be surprised if its internal contacts are touching without the ignition key turning it, also it has a casing that snaps using plastic tabs and can fall loose making contacts to join internally, quite a cheap and rubbish switch, like it is from a toy car.

    Re: Calibra Ignition Relay?

As above, sounds like the ignition switch, had one go on one of my cavs - even with no key in ignition the ignition would come on with any use of the indicator/wiper stalks - a new switch sorted it.

    Re: Calibra Ignition Relay?

Its not the ignition switch, that would make no sense considering I can turn the ignition on/off by tapping a relay that's no where near the switch.

I was able to remove the relay today, interestingly once removed the problem disappeared.... to the extent where the car could still start, be driven, all lights, wipers, indictors, heaters work fine.

The relay is orange with 6 pins, part number reads: 90457986 which is listed as the heated rear window - I didn't test this.... but how could this cause the ignition to come on?

In theory anything that is live with ignition ie - heated rear screen - could be affected by a faulty ignition switch.

The ignition switch is only a year old.

The the problem has gone now the relay has been pulled.

    Re: Calibra Ignition Relay?

so its a faulty relay that switches another electrical circuit once the ignition is switched on, and it must have a live 24hr feed into it, and the ignition live from the ignition switch comes into contact with the 24hr live feed causing your ignition to come on without the keys, hence the problem within the relay, a new one should sort out this problom.

    Re: Calibra Ignition Relay?

The heated rear window is only powered once the engine is running, so that relay in question is wired to the battery light. There's your link between ignition switched 12V and the battery.
