    Tyres wearing on the inside

    Hi all,

    Been to get a puncture repaired on my Corsa & the garage did a free tracking check as my 2 front tyres were both worn on the inside. I'd been told this before and it turned out the tracking was fine. The chap in the garage said that it may be play in the bushes or arms. Would it be worth changing the bushes and arms on both sides? The car is just over 8 years old now so I might have some wear. Any other thoughts?

    I would suggest getting the bushes and what not checked before going all out and having them changed.

    Have you got the original size and offset wheels? That can make a difference to the way the suspension and steering is loaded.

    Excess toe out will wear the inner edge but will have a characteristic wear pattern - the inner edges of the tread blocks will be more worn and have a rounded edge and the outer edges of the tread blocks will have a sharp, possibly higher, edge.
    Excess negative camber will have a 'even' wear taper towards the inner side of the tread, with no steps between the inner and outer edges of the tread blocks.

    What can confuse the issue is the caster/KPI (King Pin Inclination) which will affect the effective camber of the tyre when the steering is turned - you may have seen the old Mk3/4/5 Cortinas, which were classic examples.
    The other thing is the Ackerman angle, which sets the amount the tyres turn in compared to each other as they have different radius turns - it's common for these to be set incorrectly, to provide understeer - this effectively gives incorrect toe in or out.

    The chap at the garage said it's probably the suspension setup - but it's all standard so not a lot I can do there really.
