Tigra handling problems

Hi all,
We have got a bog standard 1.4 ecotec tigra A, it wheelspins at every chance even when not wanting to. Slides going round roundabouts slowly- add power and you don't get the exit. In general the car feels very light and unstable.
Shocks are standard, tyres are not the best and will be addressed first, not sure if this would make a huge difference.
It doesn't feel half as good as the last one we had which was a 1.6 of the same year or a 1.4 corsa which was a 98 with 130000 miles on the clock.

tyres and a geometry check would be my advice
