    Re: Slimline fans

Does it cover the matrix, can you put one on the other side as a push/pull setup?

However, I suspect you're going to be wasting your time, a fan is only effective at lowering temperatures at low road speeds - if the engine is running hot at anything over 30mph/50kph, and especially when driving faster, then you're going to have to consider a larger capacity radiator, checking the water pump is operating correctly (impellors are a know, it rare, problem), there's nothing blocking the airflow or considering there's a problem with the thermostat, fan switch, engine (head gasket?) or hoses.

I'm assuming that the radiator, as such, is in good condition, of course.

Oh, what makes you think it's overheating?
BTW, these engines have a standard thermostat that's full open at, IIRC, 106C, but lower temperature ones are available (note, once they're both fully open, over 106C, there's no difference). Some have found a 'water wetter' helps cooling and using a 50/50 antifreeze ratio can significantly raise the coolant boiling point - I think the one I use raises it to 123C

before you go swapping it out, sort out some proper ducting and shrouding first if i was you, made a massive difference on the nova and brains manta

Gordo it's a brand new engine , new updated rad , lower temp thermostat ,water pump all new hoses it's just been on the dyno for mapping and the fella doing it said to me the temps are rising to quickly and he had to use his big fan to cool it , he has told me to get another fan on it , got another eBay fan there but don't know if that will be enough using 2 of them

    Re: Slimline fans

it will run a bit hotter seeing as its new engine, but i guess the guy will know this, from what i remember the fan and rad are not ducted or shrouded in your car at all? so the fan and rad will not be making the most of the air it can shift

    Re: Slimline fans

Ah, so the dyno guy expected the slimline fan you fitted to cool an engine, under load, on the dyno?
I may be misinterpreting but the cooling fan is really only for when the car is at idle or low speeds where theres a poor supply of cooling air through it, it's NOT for when a vehicle is under load - remember, approximately as much energy has to be dissipated by the cooling system as produced by the engine as power. If he's concerned that he had to use the shop blower to supply the air through the radiator, I'd question the wisdom of using him to tune the engine.

If you've an unusual radiator installation, where vehicle movement doesn't provide much airflow, then you're going to have to look at alternatives - ducting, larger diameter fan, push/pull fan arrangement, etc.

As I said, Imay be misunderstanding what he was doing when the temp's went up.

    Re: Slimline fans

No he didn't expect it to cool it he just said he didn't think that fan would be good enough for on the road he just let me know so I can sort it, engine was only getting a running in map so wasn't really under much load

Lee any pics of your ducting please mate

no to hand but i will dig some out of my thread a bit later of the manta and the nova, i basically shrouded my rad so there are no gaps round it, forcing all the air through the rad rather than spilling round it into the bay, and the nova bumper has a pretty large inlet as stock, brian had to make an inlet on the manta so was more work but dropped his temps massively

    Re: Slimline fans

here you go mate, you can see the nova rad is sealed off round it edges just in the pic, and the manta has the same idea plus ducting...

hot air exit is also important but i think you will be ok with that as you don’t have a flat floor

What size are the fans? Are they sucking air thru the huge ic ok?

My fans (two 7") are mount above the ic but withthe bottom bit of cowling spacing the ic away from the rad abit. Ment to have a gap there to help with heat soke iirc.

I have two spal 9" fans on blow and my car now happily sits idling with no over heating issues, Make sure there on a switch as well as set to a temp in the ecu, I used to have loads of probs until then, my old fan was a pull and I was using it as a push until I realised you could undo the fan and spin it around to change it so check you have it the right way first, also have you put a small water return on the inlet as without it you will no doubt be getting air locks in the head, also when bleeding system keep cap off and pump the main rad hose until you can get no more bubbles to come into the header tank, also make sure heater matrix control knob is set to hot

    Re: Slimline fans

Surely you could just leave the car idling and that would give a true indication as to whether or not the fan is up to the job.

thanks mate , yes have the fan on a switch aswell, dont have any heaters , took it for a drive and the temps were ok on the road started creaping up slowley in trafic but i expected that , will see what its like with 2 fans on it

mine was sweet as a nut on long journeys but as soon as in traffic rised quick, double check its blead alright by squeezing the big hose and double check your fan is on the right way around sounds stupid put once i span mine around it doubled its flow tbh

    Re: Slimline fans

The "system" I made consists in:
Relocated the oil rad/cooler, threw an air-con fan in the the resulting space (so now 2 air-con fans connected together), connected the 2 fans with the one behind the rad. So when the fan switches on, the other 2 air-con fans will kick in. Also fitted a 82 degrees thermostat. If needed, there is space in front of the FMIC for a 8'' slim fan.
I don't know how well is this working as I am still building the engine. Eventually, with the big turbo setup, will have to ditch the oem fan behind the rad and put 2 slim-lines , but I worry if they will melt.
    What do you think?
