Question Corsa Sport 1.6 - Rack End Removal

Hello all, in the process of repairing my crash damaged 1.6 sport, the offside wheel took most of the impact and has damaged the rack end on that side. I've got the new parts, the only thing stopping me from putting them on is getting the old one off.

Is there a special tool or anything to get the rack end off the rack? Or is there just a technique that i don't know about?

Any info or ideas much appreciated.

    Cheers, dave.

there should be a cover over wher it screws onto the rack. remove it and the rack end should have a place on it to screw it off with a spanner or watever, it will be the shape of a nut if ye know wat i mean

Hi, cheers for the reply, yep i got that far already, took boot off, took the small plastic dust cover off the joint to the rack, then both the rack piston and the end of the rack end have two flat edges on either side. I had mole grips on the rack end flats for over an hour or so today and it wouldnt budge.

If thats really all thats meant to be done to get them off then perhaps my only hold back is that the flats are at an off angle, as in, they arent facing down straight, so i cant get a spanner on them, the mole grips kept slipping off when i proper leaned into them.

I cant turn the rack end round a bit either to get more access, becasue, obviously, the rack and pistons dont move that way.

    Cheers again, dave

aaah, that might explain it. Hmm ok. Well i'll try that next time im down at the car. Now just need to find a 32mm spanner... Not got one that big, lol.

    Cheers mate, dave

*EDIT* - also, if anyone can confirm or deny that they are left hand thread please do, thanks.

I don't think they are a left handed thread. Check the thread on your new one. You'll be able to tell from there.

I've done the same with my Arosa. I was told that it was done up very tight. It wasn't. So it'll either come off easy or be a pain.

Just had someone else off AllCorsa say they were normal thread aswell, and by looking at my new one, it seems to be normal thread too, so thats a bonus. At least i was trying to turn it the right direction today, lol.

Cheers for the tip, will be off to halfords to buy me a 32mm spanner in the morning, should have it off by lunch time! Then onto assembling new hub, stick the new driveshafts in, and then it might even be driveable... lol

    Driveable?! What's that?

Well good luck. Take the new part to Halfords to check that the 32mm spanner is the right one. You don't want to take another trip due to it being a 34mm.

Lol, nah its the right size, was at the car again today, cant get access from underneath, as the flats on the end of the rack end are facing the wrong way, if someone holds the steering wheel on full lock, i can JUST get on it from the engine bay, pushing the aux belt out the way. I had all my strength pulling it upwards (turning it anticlockwise) and it wasnt budging at all. Thought i'd break the rack before it undid.

Are they meant t be this tight? How hard is it to take the rack out? Not something i wanted to be doing in all honesty but it might come to it.

    Dave

the steering rod is tight cause it has red threadlock on thread so you need to heat it up for easy remove and with the rack removed from car
