As above - return spring and/or rusted up or dirty shoe to cable mechanisms.

What car?
Drums or Calipers at the back?

Please give us more info. People will reply when they know, there is no need to bttt your post.

If it is urgent, a local garage will be able to help.

I'm not sure what arrangement the MK4 Astra has but I suspect its similar to the Vectra. The handbrake cables clip into lugs at the bottom of the brake assembly and pivot there. These sieze up and need freeing. If they are like the Vectra then there is also a small spring at each arm (visible from below the car) which help the brake cable return to its original position - these may be missing or rusted up.

Lastly on my Vectra, the actual part where the handbrake cable attached to the rear arm had rusted and caused the cable to snag.

Best thing to do is to work back from the cable where it attaches to the rear arm and free everything up from there. Its a couple of hours work normally.

I'm sure someone with more experience of MK4 Astras will be able to confirm if they are like the Vectra rear disc/drum setup.

Some Mk4 had problems with the rear calipers. Ask Vauxhall as I think some where recalled

Re: handbrake keeps getting stuck on ????

i would start by stripping the rear brakes both sides. From there you will be able to operate the handbrake mechanism manually which should help determine where the problem lies.

Re: handbrake keeps getting stuck on ????

Hi all
Thanks for all the repleys,
What was said at the top is right, all the spring are there, and all looks to be working as it should, when handbrake is on, but it just does not spring backwards, just been trying to free them up from under the car, brother keeps putting handbrake on, and me under car with screw driver pulling it off, loads off wd ,no joy ,think I am going to have to take cailpers all off and see whats up,not this weekend, hope to go to the pod, maybe give it a go tomo night, will let you no how I get on.
