| Astra Mk4 X18XE1 temp guage Got a wierd one here...
My temp guage sits on rock bottom whilst driving around, whether im giving it some stick or just driving normally. However, if I stop at lights or am in traffic then the guage climbs upto 90 and sits there quite happily but as soon as I move off then the guage starts to drop down to zero.
The fan does kick in and the heaters do get red hot.
Whats going on? Loose connection? Shonky sensor? Thermostat?

Sounds like a dodgy sender or guage.

| Re: Astra Mk4 X18XE1 temp guage Just wondering, that's all. Unplug the sensor and connect the two pins together. Your guage should shoot round to maximum hotness. If it doesn't, it's not the sender. |

| Re: Astra Mk4 X18XE1 temp guage Right bridged the connector the needle stayed put, but the fan kicked in.
However I left the engine ticking over and then the needle climbed up.
The rad does get hot all the way up too Jack! |

I thought the temperature sensor for the fan was on the radiator itself? I don't know if that's the same one that drives the guage though. |

Im thinking the sensor controls the temp signal to the ECU, controlls the fan, and the guage. I'm no further forward now than when i started.
I can't seem to find anywhere on the engine a separate sensor for the temp guage. |

| Re: Astra Mk4 X18XE1 temp guage Ah, in that case, maybe the guage is driven by the sensor in the radiator.
I can't bloody remember. |

| Re: Astra Mk4 X18XE1 temp guage I believe on the Mk4, they have replaced the separate engine management, temperature gauge and fan switch sensors with one sensor which feeds the ECU and then the ECU then drives the temp gauge and feeds the fan ECU. |

I'll pop in and get a new sensor tomorrow and give it a try, not too expensive are they |

| Re: Astra Mk4 X18XE1 temp guage As above - there is also some logic that lives in the dial unit IIRC
