xe keeps chewing new batteries

this will be the 3rd brand new battery i will have fitted in the space of 6 months, for some reason after a while my battery seems to drain itself and the only way i can start it every time is with a jump start, after 10 minutes the engine cuts out due to needing a jump start again, the last battery i had checked over to find it was shorted out, any suggestions to what could cause it. alternator, starter motor etc

could be alternator over charging battery which would drain a life of a battery withing months.

Re: xe keeps chewing new batteries

thats what i originally thought, it was an alternator fault, not too bothered as my uncle is taking the car this week to be mot'd and have the carbs set up so i will have him look at it then

Re: xe keeps chewing new batteries

i'd say alternator aswell. put a voltmeter over the battery and see what its reading. should be about 14v with the engine running. did the fault just occur? have you got an earth between the altarnatore adjuster bracket and earth?

Re: xe keeps chewing new batteries

Could be a dead or leaky diode pack on the alternator causing the battery to drain back through the alternator to ground.

Re: xe keeps chewing new batteries

lol problem sorted fan belt had come off, went down to the garage to have a quick look to see if there was any visible problems, noticed the fan belt wasnt on the alternator, will need to tighten up the alternator when i get morwe timwe, infact i will change the belt while im doing it. thankfully it was only that and not 50 quid for a new battery lol
