Astra MK3 Braking Problem

Hello all, I have a 1995 mk3 astra td, when the car is running and the brake pedal is pressed a few times in succession the pedal stiffens up, the upon holding steady pressure on the pedal, it seems that the pedal pushes on in. I suspect the master cylinder as there are no leaks. Would a faulty servo cause a problem like this? Any replies gratefully received.

Hi Davie, the car has no abs and the brake pedal would require more pressure after the first pump or 2.

Ok then a would suspect that since having no loss of fluid then it would be servo related , worth trying to get a 2nd hand one .Possibly a faulty master cylinder also so maybe worthwhile replacing the two parts

Never done it myself on a mk3 but basically you would disconnect the brake pedal rod to the servo which would be done from inside the car and then iirc you need to remove the windscreen cowling and then remove the wiper motor and linkage to get to the servo securing bolts.

As its a Diesel it will have a vacume pump, is that working correctly???

Servos tend to be more reliable than the pumps, so I would recomend looking at the pump first!!!

would have said its the m/c as you are getting pressure with a few pumps then it bleeds away. for a mk3 they can be had from £30 upwards from local motor factors or ebay.
