    Spot that sound! Please :-)

    Hi guys,

My '98 Astra 1.6 8v has developed a loud whining sound when idling, and i'm not sure where its coming from! Can anyone help identify, or point me in the right direction please?

I have put a sound clip and photo of where it seems to be coming from here:

    www.mikeangove.com/noise.wav
    http://www.mikeangove.com/engine.jpg

It seems like the bog black box bit. The whining gets higher pitched as i rev, and then drowned out by the engine.

If anyone can advise that would be great, else i guess it's off to the garage.

    Thanks
    MikeA

My water pump made a whining noise when it gave up. The bearings inside it were shot.
back on the roads at last!

deffo sounds like a bearing either going or gone, would try benns suggestion first as is easiest option and tbh sounds most probable too.
    I smile because I don't know what's going on.

altenator, water pump, cam belt idler/tensioner. need diagnosing soon as a couple of those are engine threatening.
