i have a y reg 2.0l dti astra and want to change the rear wheel bearings because i am getting a squeeking from the rear once i have driven a few miles, this noise goes if i pull the handbrake on slightly or touch the brake pedal,
i have jacked the back up an checked for any play or noise but can find nothing is this likely to be the wheel bearings and is changing them straight forward or not .
I've had this more than once on cavs I've had with rear disc/drum brakes.
Clean out should sort it.
Could try driving along with handbrake gently applied for 2/3 seconds, will clean up the linings.
Edit/ That right Big Col, didn't realise disc only came in so early on these. My mistake.
i suppose there is that possibility but as you say the noise is affected by the brake pedal/ handbrake then it's more logical to assume the problem lies in that area.
i had the same problem as you when I first got my Astra.
